Florida Creatives Podcast

As long as the Florida Creatives Happy Hour has existed, we have been recording podcast profiles with members of our community. As each interview is recorded, time rolls on behind us, the ideals and goals of our group become more refined, and we hope the content of the podcasts will reflect our evolution.

If you've been out at cultural events in Orlando in 2009, there's a good chance you'll see a man looking down at his sketchbook with his watercolors out. He's Thomas Thorspecken, and he's drawing and painting the scene around him. Check his blog in a few days and see the results.

In 2008, Chris Jones put together a charity project which collects unused computers, installs free software, and trains a needy family or organization in the care and use. Caring Compy will soon have non-profit status, and we couldn't be more proud of our Florida Creatives membership.

Project X Meeting - Jan 12th, 9PM

Gregg Pollack
Greg Pederson
George Drage
Eric Marden
Ryan Price
David Rogers
Rachael Page
Joshua Blount

After discussing plans for BarCamp in 2009, we also discussed a program similar to Google's "Summer of Code" where we solicit projects, mentors and interns from the local talent pool.

Listen to part one of this meeting at FLCreatives Steering Committee Jan 2009

David/PHP - Workshops - certification - mentoring

Eric Marden - mentoring? people get involved with selfish intent
-- good for the mentee and mentors
-- interns

Ryan - FLCreatives Jobs group - http://floridacreatives.com/group/jobs
- reach out to schools (college), hold an event
- I have contacts at the three major schools - UCF, Valencia, FullSail

Rachael - would this look like a user group on campus?

Eric - expand beyond web developers
- an application - a form for the potential mentees to volunteer for something
- a la Summer of Code
- find non-profits or worthy causes, assign a mentor, get them involved

David - Les, from the Knowledge Shop - older folks interested in learning

Eric - what questions do we ask? what info can we collect?
- creative internship this summer

Ryan - create a wiki page with potential projects, mentors, mentees
- also, give them a venue to show off what they've done, get some validation

Eric - or do a special event, "awards" ceremony

George - agrees that students are looking to learn

David - there is plenty of thirst for knowledge
- it's a worthwhile practice to tutor someone

Josh - specific tasks, and specific time frame - a la Summer of Code
- it's measurable, kids and projects benefit

Ryan - United Arts of Central Florida - professional development grants
- 3-to-1 matching, also a specific time and task

Josh - also, some of our knowledge is worth it, whether or not money is involved

Eric - looks like we need two types of data collection, one for mentorees and one for projects
- have the event in the fall / winter

Ryan - use the Steering Committe group for discussion http://floridacreatives.com/group/steering-committee/

Here are some notes I took during the discussion:

Mission/Purpose:
Organic Approach is good, but other groups are entering, so we need some focus
Writing stuff down - a wiki committee?
Benefits to membership
Harness the energy
How do you sell "unnetworking" to folks who have never networked?
What benefit to other user groups?
Refresh-like group? Mix it up.
Creative Consortium - Creating a physical space for Florida Creatives
A Tangible Project - a physical product
Something more than Happy Hour

User groups
give a calendar, have a presence at local user groups, give people permission to be evangelists
Tell a story about who you are

Non-profit
*we're not spending tons of money
*liability - insurance
*if we were sponsoring tons of local user groups
*a simple LLC can be a good shelter

Events?
*Demonstrative - "This is my passion, this is what I made"
*Representative of a place, not a discipline

Community Support
*A Creative Collective
*Portfolio Review
*Promotional Help
*The Studio Model - A Cohort - Students, internships
*"The Big Brothers of Geekdom"
*Mentoring, getting paid, earning experience
*Florida Creatives as the go-between for user groups and cohort studio

marc. with a c. (aka Marc Sirdoreus) is someone I've been a friend of for the last 2+ years, and a fan of from the first moment I saw him play on the same day. I have had the honor of performing on stage with his band, but someone doesn't really help Marc create something, as much as support his performance. The exception would be Chris Zabriskie, Marc's creative other half (not appearing in this podcast). Listen in as I pay verbal homage to a good friend and a great contributor to Orlando's independent music and 'zine scene.

The following songs appear in this podcast:

  • Classic Country Wasn't Multitracked in '61 (Normal Bias)
  • Born Vintage (If Conditions Persist, I Will Resist)
  • Bite Sized Help (This World is Scary as Fuck)

monochrom is an Austrian art-theory group with an international resume that makes me very jealous. I got the chance to sit down with Johannes Grenzfurthner and Evelyn Fürlinger over some Thai food and talk about some of his many achievements, as well as just talk with an intelligent and well-humored guy.

There are lots more show-notes necessary for this episode, but I don't have the time to sit and list all of the references we make. If someone is motivated and wants to help listing relevant websites, etc. I would appreciate it very much.

Catch some videos and other collected works of monochrom on boing boing.

The 2nd Annual BlogOrlando unconference was a smashing success, and lots of Florida Creatives members participated or acted as discussion leaders. Ryan Price gets impressions from Becky Lane and Darren McDaniel about what they took away from the conference.

Florida Creatives would like to send huge thanks to Josh Hallet and all the event organizers and contributors for putting on BlogOrlando.

Becky works with educational theatre for elementary age kids, and Darren works on a social networking site, so the crossover between their jobs actually turned out some interesting points during the discussion. One example: there are kids' social networks and moms' social networks, but none really for moms (or dads) of kids who are using social networks.
