gapingvoid: "cartoons drawn on the back of business cards": the hughtrain

Fri, 08/15/2008 - 17:55

THE HUGHTRAIN: "THE MARKET FOR SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN IS INFINITE." [Last updated: January, 2005] We are here to find meaning. We are here to help other people do the same. Everything else is secondary. We humans want to believe in our own species. And we want people, companies and products in our lives that make it easier to do so. That is human nature. It's not enough for the customer to love your product. They have to love your process as well. The primary job of an advertiser is not to communicate benefit, but to communicate conviction. There's only one thing harder than starting a new business: Re-inventing an old one.

Whereas in the past people tended to move largely because of company transfers or job opportunities, today's world sees people moving based on a whole new set of principles. Florida explains that people are now in pursuit of something more intangible than a salary increase: a place that fits with who they are.

Technology Review: Ten Web Startups to Watch

Mon, 06/23/2008 - 14:56

In the chaos that followed Kenya's disputed presidential election last December, 1,200 people were killed, and several hundred thousand more fled their homes. Skeptical of the accuracy of official reports, a group of Web developers and bloggers with Kenyan ties cobbled together a Web application that could receive citizen incident reports via text message from any mobile phone in Kenya and display them as a Google Maps application. Cofounded by Erik Hersman, an American son of missionary parents who was raised in Kenya (he is author of the blog Whiteafrican.com and now lives in Florida), the group called the creation Ushahidi--the Swahili word for "testimony." They have formed a nonprofit company and are finalizing funding with a large foundation to turn Ushahidi into a platform that can be deployed easily and rapidly in areas of crisis. Already, a version of Ushahidi is being used to track anti-immigrant violence afflicting South Africa.

What’s the web for? « Perfect Path

Sun, 06/22/2008 - 12:35

A slow project this one. Ask as many people as I can remember to do when I’ve got my camera with me to answer a “simple” question - “What is the web for?” I tried it out at the Tuttle Club a few weeks ago. This is what came out of the mouths of some of the Smartest People in Social Media (TM) So there are two ways I want to take this forward. I want to do it with a more diverse group of people, and I want to edit a bunch of them together in a watchable way. Your thoughts on how to do this are welcome. I have more. I will release them. Soon.

Alexander Spoerer At the moment, I'm preparing for my next residency at Seton Hill. It's been a long road but I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel and it's not a freight train. I have only 15,000 words left in the manuscript and my mentor says that I can get it done before the start of Residency on June 24th.

Many of us in Orlando have demanding schedules and even worse, jobs unrelated to our talents. I built this site primarily as a way to access my work via the internet, with hopes of recruiting others to collaborate with. I wanted an area for clients to find answers regarding their projects, and quite possibly provide input about major steps artists would take. I have taken some of my experiences and mistakes and have attempted to engineer new ways to manage my workflow. The following examples are implemented.

Free software vs. software-as-a-service: Is the GPL too weak for the Web?

Mon, 06/09/2008 - 00:29

The term free software was defined by Richard Stallman. We know Stallman as the founder of the GNU Project, the author of the General Public License, and founder of the Free Software Foundation. Stallman defined free software this way: not by the price of the software, but by the freedoms it accords to its users. Specifically, users of free software are free to: * Use the software for any purpose * Study how the program works * Change the software, modifying the source code to meet the user’s needs * Redistribute the software, with or without modifications—to share the software. Free software is also known as open source. Access to the source code of a program is a precondition of the aforementioned freedoms—specifically, the freedoms to study the program and to modify it.

IT Conversations | OReilly MySQL Conference | Rasmus Lerdorf

Fri, 05/23/2008 - 11:58

Rasmus believes there are four kinds of programmers. First, the pragmatic ones who are just after solving their own problems. The second kind finds programming as a means of self-expression, like an artist finds self-expression in his art-work. The third are the real programmers who enjoy programming for its own sake because it creates a hormone called oxytocin in them, and the fourth are the open source zealots who wish to change the world.

Florida Arts Blog

Thu, 05/22/2008 - 12:07

This site is designed to be a place for and about Florida artists. It is here as a tool to allow us to list upcoming events and to post other various notices and advertisements. All listings are subject to our prior approval. It is also meant to be a place where local writers can share some of their creativity. Writers are encouraged to submit their work and we will select a small number to feature on this blog in the Writers’ Corner section of this site on a regular basis. All genres are welcome. We’ll also be working on various reviews of performing art activities throughout the state - whenever we have the time and money - and be writing reviews on these events. No doubt most of our content will focus on South Florida (which is where we’re based), but we’d love to hear from people in every region.
