Florida Creatives 18: Eric Marden
I’m a little late in posting this, but a few weeks ago I got together with Ryan Price, esteemed colleague and founder of Florida Creatives. We recorded the following podcast… over a bottle of scotch. We ramble a little, but during the conversation we discussed the beginnings of Florida Creatives, the similar idea I had in 2001, and a variety of other pursuits involving organizing groups of like minded people. If you can get past the tangents, I think you’ll learn about the local scene, and you

Brevard user group meeting time
Well, this week I’ve gotten one step close to organizing a Brevard RIA/web developer user group. I hope to have our first meeting on August 21, 2008. I’d like to have the meetings every 3rd Thursday of the month starting @ 8:00 PM, lasting for about 1 to 2 hours based on the topic. Short of finding a place beachside or near 95 that is open in the evenings and has wifi, we’re going to stick with House of Joe for now on 192, next to the Melbourne Mall. Initially it looks like it’ll be a small gro

Orlando Theatre Pot-Luck
Back in April, a bunch of local theatre folks got together to have dinner and meet up. Tonight was the second installment in what seems to be a 3-or-4-times-a-year event, held in local theatre spaces. The April 6th pot-luck was hosted by Mad Cow Theatre downtown, and today’s was held in the lobby of the Orlando REP. From the Wikipedia page on Potluck: Folk etymology has derived the term “potluck” from the Native American custom of potlatch; the word “potluck”, however, is actually of English

Luck is where Preparation Meets Opportunity: CMU’s Randy Pausch
So many great things in this video - it’s an hour and fifteen minutes, but you really should watch this. Not only did Randy achieve his childhood dreams, but he has taken his process for doing so and boiled it down to this talk, which we can now pass on to others. This guy is dying, yet he is so positive. I love it and I love this talk. Thanks @supaben34 for bringing up my day (actually, my whole year). Some key points: The Head Fake: we don’t send kids to sports to learn about football. T
Florida Creatives Job Group
“Florida Creatives is, first and foremost, a networking group. People of all disciplines and all levels of experience are invited to come together to enrich their creative experience, learn from each other, and gain inspiration in a social environment. The immediate benefits of such a group are often collaboration, employment opportunities and creative partnerships, with fringe benefits being innumerable.” However, since the beginning of Florida Creatives, people have clambered for a place to
No Ethics for Web Designers and Developers!
I recently decided to put a code of ethics on my business website. Calling it “Our Pledge”, I thought it would be a quick task that involved a few Google and Yahoo! searches. I was very wrong. You would think a code of ethics would be a simple matter. In 2008, I fully expected to find dozens of examples from which to emulate or follow. I could hardly find any, and the few I found were paltry and even laughable. The chief reason I decided to put it on my own website was to set a tone with pote

Florida Creatives, East Coast style...
Brevard county now has its own FloridaCreatives.com group, thanks to the initiative taken by Lawrence. We even have a logo that doesn't look like the second life logo (hah, couldn't resist Ryan.) The group is up to 16 members right now on the wiki, and discussion is getting started on the when's and where's of getting a happy hour going. It's looking like a healthy group coming together over here on the coast. So who is it for? What's it about? The Florida Creative meet ups have really been a

Apparently, everybody hates Ted Murphy. I don’t. I think he’s a smar
Local Developer Events in Orlando
Even though BarCampOrlando is a few months behind us, there’s still plenty to do this summer for us developers. It seems like in the past 2 years or so more and more events are springing up in town — exciting stuff. Finding new events can sometimes be a little tricky though. There’s a few ways to make this a little easier. Gregg Pollack from Rails Envy maintains a Google Calendar titled Central Florida Tech Events which is probably the easiest way to stay up to date. You can search for it with
