Have you been to Deland lately? You know, Stetson, antiques, cool bars, great walking town? Did you know they had their first BarCampDeland last weekend? I ended up seeing more people we know from the Brevard Space Coast Creatives group there, although Chad who is a regular at our Happy Hours in Orlando made it too. It was a really great event, with the $6 lunch coupons at any of the great downtown lunch spots, and especially a few awesome talks from: a filmmaker who visited Indiaa pro-photo couplea sound hackera graphics programmer and an inspired designer. There were lots of other great talks, but at some point Kathryn and I decided to kick back on the porch of DaVinci's with a beer and recap my recent trip to the NYC Maker Faire. I was very glad to have met the organizer of the affair, Ray Villalobos. Serious Kudos goes to Ray and his whole team for a number of reasons, but also because I don't think I've ever seen so many babies at a BarCamp. :)

Broomstick PonyAnother really awesome thing you missed recently was the Urban ReThink Broomstick Pony Derby. Please check out this awesome gallery from the Orlando Sentinel and video from the Orlando Weekly. This was one of the greatest displays of creativity, foolishness and poor athleticism I have ever been a part of. Can't wait until next year!

This month's Orlando Happy Hour: 10/22 at The Courtesy

It's hard to believe we've been without our home at Crooked Bayou for almost two years now, though Hawker's, The Falcon and Gringos have been good to us. I got a tip from a fellow creative about a new cocktail bar called the Courtesy that's very near Gringos. He said the cocktails are fresh and exciting (they server beer and wine too, and make their own soda), and I figure if we get hungry then our favorite taco stand is just across Washington.

Happy Hour #71 at The Courtesy - Tweet it, share it, bring your cocktail snob friends!
The regular time and date: Monday, October 22nd, 6pm until 9-ish. Parking meters downtown are free after 6. Parking on Orange Ave is free after 7.

Community or Meetup:

The Courtesy is a new establishment in an old buidling riding the "mixology" wave - they make some interesting cocktails and serve up craft beer and wine too. They are in the Dolive buidling - that place that was boarded up for the past few years - don't let that scare you off, I've been told it's a really great new place.

If you have been to our past happy hours at Gringos Locos it is diagonally across the corner from them, at the Northwest intersection of Washington and Orange Ave.

I'm sure we'll get hungry, and Gringos would be a great place to finish, so don't worry if you're not into cocktails. I also read the Courtesy makes their own sodas!

Come and join some of the passionate creative minds of Orlando in one of the longest-running happy hour meetups in the state of Florida (almost 6 years!). Our goal is to provide a safe environment to share your schemes, unearth passions and meet mentors or co-founders. We always get a pretty diverse representation - lately we have graphic designeers, lawyers, illustrators, city planners, startup founders, tech folks and a plethora of others.

This is by far one of the best ways to "get involved" in the community. The people at our Happy Hours are plugged in to what is going on and who is doing it.

Make sure to check out FloridaCreatives.com for even more cool stuff going on around the state.

Jacksonville, FL

One Spark is the world's first crowdfunding festival where you can come and support inspiration in person and in real-time.

The fastest way for people to launch ideas is to have all of the resources they need in one place and at one time. One Spark is an event that brings those people (artists, technologists, scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and the public) together for 5 days. During One Spark 2013 each of these folks will share their prototypes, experiments and projects in a really cool way by using downtown Jacksonville as a platform. Any place can be a venue (parking lots, businesses, restaurants, parks, etc.) and anyone can enter as a creator.

Global Peace Film Festival is a great opportunity to see many great Independent movies, right here In Winter Park, and Orlando. Many Directors will be at the Festival as well. The movie that really caught my attention is Street Paper (http://streetpaperfilm.com/), directed by Christopher Roberts. It is a very moving story about, less fortunate homeless people turning their lives around and getting back on their feet, by selling Street Papers. A very moving story and a MUST see! Screenings:

After the Factory - Global Peace Film Festival

Location

Cobb Plaza Cinema Cafe Orlando, FL
Sep 20 2012 6:00p - 7:00p

In our troubled times of unemployment and corporate outsourcing we have seen the devastating effects in industrial towns all over the world. The documentary “After the Factory,” is based in Detroit, Michigan and Lodz, Poland, and gives insight to their different yet very similar backgrounds.

“After the Factory,” goes beyond the usual representation of homelessness, poverty, and crime in these “fallen cities.” Its point of focus is the recovery of these two cities and how their communities are tackling these problems and making a difference.
