Ignite Orlando

If you had five minutes to talk to Orlando on stage, what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? Around the world geeks have been putting together Ignite nights to show their answers. Combine this with an onsite contest where contestants are grouped together to make things and you have Ignite Orlando.

Ignite was started in Seattle in 2006 by Brady Forrest and Bre Pettis. Since then 100s of 5 minute talks have been given across the world. There are thriving Ignite communities in Orlando, Seattle, Portland, Paris, and NYC.

Florida Creatives is now hosting a monthly Show and Tell on the 1st Tuesday of every month at Urban ReThink. July 5th will be the third event, and we are always looking for new participants - anyone is welcome to attend.

Here is a Facebook video of Nathan's Show and Tell - a multi-dimensional pendulum installation with three screens, and three controls, two for parameters, and one to rotate the graphic in the center.

Show and Tell, for adults! Show us a project you've been working on, your favorite book, your wallet, your new haircut, an abstract idea you think we should all know about, a love letter, a scarf, a new gadget, or tell a great story from another creative community. Let us get inside the story, or see behind the process, introduce us to something new and amazing.

We have been pitching the idea for a iPhone application to read the magnetic stripe on IDs and driver licence to sell to bars/pubs/restaurants/liquor stores. We have been obsessively researching the feasibility of the app and are ready to start the build.

Would anybody be interested in teaming up for development on a co-founding basis?

Well over a year ago, I set out on a mission to make the Florida Creatives website a more usable and self-discoverable website. I think it started when someone looking at the site asked "Are you guys on Twitter?", and when I thought about how to point that out to him, I found it just was not obvious. This was the original whiteboard sketch I came up with:

Video from TEDx Orlando

Orlando had its first TEDx on November 13th, 2010 at the Orlando Science Center. Video from the TEDxOrlando talks have started to be released on YouTube recently.

Here is a video from Marc Sardy titled Educating for Peace through the Global Peace Film Festival:

Marc Sardy is passionate about educating for peace. Following formative experiences in the Australian outback, the UK, Malaysia, France, and China, he became convinced that cinema can be a powerful tool for inspiring people and motivating them to come together. Since 2005, he's worked with Orlando's Global Peace Festival in order to realize this vision. Festival programming focuses on diversity, and films are selected for the potential they have to increase understanding, awareness, appreciation and action -- prerequisites for a peaceful world.
