BarCamp Tampa 2008 conference will be the first in the Bay area for this unusual technology and new media conference.

Tampa, FL – August 8, 2008 – BarCamp Tampa 2008: the interactive BarCamp conference (http://barcamptampabay.com/) will take place October 11-12, 2008 at the University of South Florida College of Business in Tampa. This is the first year for a BarCamp event in Tampa and will bring together thought leaders from technology and New Media to explore exciting new developments in their fields.

Topics may include, but are not limited to: open source software, startups, UI design, entrepreneurship, iphone applications, AJAX, hardware hacking, Ruby, Java, .net, PHP robotics, mobile computing, bioinformatics, RSS, Social Software, video, podcasting, music, blogs, programming languages, Virtual Reality, mashups and the future of technology.

Saturday’s events will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. and will focus on technology. Saturday evening there will be a party for conference attendees to share and get to know each other a little better. Food and music will be provided. Sunday will start at 10:00 a.m. and end at 5:30 p.m. and will focus on New Media.

Unlike traditional meetings, a BarCamp, is what is known as an unconference where people interested in a wide range of technologies come together to participate, teach and learn. The format does not have scheduled speakers. Instead, the morning of the BarCamp, everyone proposes the sessions they would like to have covered. Those sessions are put on a schedule and groups form and start an intense session of learning. Everyone who attends a BarCamp is expected to teach and to participate. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join.

People who attend should be prepared to share with barcampers, and when they leave be prepared to share it with the world.

What is BarCamp?

The BarCamp concept originated when people realized the best times they had at conferences were the times between sessions when people could meet informally and share and learn. The goal of BarCamp is to facilitate this type of informal learning interaction for an entire day. The event organizers provide the food, the space, the wireless, and the audio visual equipment. The attendees bring their laptops, some ideas for session topics and provide the content and the participation.

Deep Carnivale - A Celebration of Words

The Artists and Writers Group, Inc., has scheduled the second annual Deep Carnivale literature festival for September 27 2008, in Ybor City on the campus of Hillsborough Community College, at the Cuban Club, and along 14th Street between 9th Avenue and Palm Avenue and is free and open to the public of all ages.

This literary festival aspires to bring Florida authors, writers and poets and related vendors together to share in a celebration of literature and writing with the Tampa Bay community. Approximately 70 poets, fiction writers, and songwriters as well as visual artists presented work at the first event in 2007. There are events for all ages.

There will be four sound stages for readings and live music. Literacy and arts activities will be available for ages from 2 through middle school and workshops available to adults of all ages. The schedule is currently under construction and will be announced around September 1.

One goal is to excite all children and young adults about the pleasures of reading and using the written and spoken word creatively in its many wonderful and diverse forms. Another goal is to illuminate the numerous talented writers living in our community, and a third goal is to provide a new opportunity to emerging authors to develop their audience.

The festival will also have an outdoor live music stage featuring singer/songwriters including Ronny Elliott, Bunko Squad and Darrell House. Booksellers, small publishing houses and related vendors will attend the event. Related activities include street theater, food vendors and book signings.

Heard it on a Blog: January 2008

Local blog shenomenon Sarah in Tampa is now creating content for ReadWriteWeb and Microsoft's Channel 10. Heard it on a blog from Tampa called Sticks of Fire, perhaps the best placeblog in Florida.

Local pop act Mumpsy has won the Garage Pop category of the Great Sufjan Song Xmas Xchange (click to stream the song from the contest page). with "Left Alone on Christmas Day". Heard it on Mumpsy's MySpace.

Another musician, Chris Zabriskie, released his latest album this week. Included is a song entitled "Joss Whedon" about the creator of Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was picked up on some Whedon fan sites and Joss himself left a comment on the song. You can download it the whole album, "O Great Queen Electric, What Do You Have Waiting for Me?" via MP3 on Amazon for $8. Heard it on Chris' blog.

Orlando has culture! We've had it all year and we'll have lots more in the coming year. Seth Kubersky, the Orlando Weekly's culture guy, recaps The Culture Beautiful for us through the eyes of five of Orlando's Arts Big-Wigs: Frankie Messina, Anna McCambridge, Wavy Davy Jordan, Rick Jones and Megan Bardoe. Sticks of Fire is a Tampa-based local blog I subscribe to, and they are co-hosting a blogger dinner in Tampa next Tuesday. Here's the announcement:

Where: Hawks Neighborhood Grill — 3114 Bay to Bay Boulevard, South Tampa

Why: Putting names and faces to the local blogging community, to share a beverage, and say hello.

Everyone is invited to come out and participate. This is an Un-Meeting, with no agenda or specific purpose other than meeting and getting to know one-another “offline.” If you have any questions, or if you plan to attend, send me an email: jim [at] stateofsunshine [dot] com, and let me know — so we can get an estimated headcount for the restaurant.

This one is co-hosted by State of Sunshine, Sticks of Fire, Seminole Heights, Out in Left Field, and In Theory…

It was events like this that inspired me to start Florida Creatives... well, BlogOrlando, the Fringe Festival and Grandma Party specifically. I know the Tampa area has Craft Out Loud (March 3rd, Globe Coffee House) and a couple of other events that bring creatives together... I wonder if they are being reached out to? That's why I bought Florida Creatives a booth at Grandma Party, and why I want to raise the $325 for a table at Fringe (May 17-28, Loch Haven Park).

If anyone asks me, I'll set up a PayPal donation for it. Also, if we get surplus money we can maybe supply some beers to everyone who donated as a way of keeping the money in the loop. Either that or purchase a table at crafting out loud or support an Assembly show, or some of these other creative events around the state that could benefit from knowing there is a larger community out there. I love Orlando, but I called this group Florida Creatives for a reason.
