Coworking Miami: Brikolodge

Reposted from a message on the international Coworking discussion list:

...we recently opened a coworking facility in Miami's Wynwood Arts District. Brikolodge is a loft unit in a live-work building, home to design shops, galleries and some of the best views of downtown from the roof-top pool. We have been hosting RefreshMiami meetups since our inception and we have recently opened our doors to The Figure Network - a local artist who conducts weekend workshops on figure drawing and has also posted some of his artwork around the facility.

We are always looking for more ways to expand our community. If any of you are ever in the Miami area, please stop by and visit :) Check out our website: www.brikolodge.org

Orlando Coworking News: CoLab Downtown

Plucked off the wire via NFi Studios' latest update:

NFi is working with other techs and creatives in the community to support the launch of CoLab Orlando. CoLab Orlando is a Coworking Space for anyone looking to have a dedicated work area (desk or suite), and be part of a community environment. CoLab Orlando is located on the 6th floor of the Angebilt building and is a work in progress. The tradition of the Angebilt, Orlando’s most historic building, combined with the innovation of Orlando’s tech and creative talent, make CoLab an exciting project we can all share in.

Owner of the Angebilt, John Hussey, is calling on the communities feedback and support…
“Over the past several years I’ve seen the Orlando tech & creative community really emerge. As a commercial real-estate owner, I am proud to be part of Orlando Coworking. However, I know it’s not my vision that will make this space successful. CoLab Orlando is founded the community’s support and feedback. I ask for your feedback in what you want from CoLab Orlando, and with your support we will make this a success for our city. ”

- John Hussey, President/CEO, RealTrend Inc.
For more info on getting involved with CoLab Orlando, contact Sterling (sterling@nfistudios.com) or Dave (david@hydrastudio.com)

FYI, the Angebilt is the same building as the April BarCamp - at the corner of Orange Ave and Wall Street. It's a historic hotel, as well as the current home of the Downtown UCF Technology Incubator, Subway, Finhenry's, and several Wall Street venues. Easy access to the Library, lots of downtown eateries, bars, clubs, hangouts, coffee shops and the like. I couldn't think of many better places for Orlando's first official full-time 24/7 cow-orking space.

Stirring the Orlando Coworking Pot

I got an email today through a local creative named Tiffany - she asked about shared office space.

In my reply, I pointed her to the Orlando Coworking Wiki page on the Official Coworking Wiki and here on FLCreatives Wiki.

Obviously, you've got to know about the coworking mailing list as well.

Once you've checked all of that out, then you can start going to Coworking Tuesdays at Stardust. They are literally every Tuesday during the day - not exactly 9 to 5, but hours like those. Stardust has free wi-fi, great food, coffee, tea, wine, beer, liquor (for those really hard client phone calls), and videos for rent. What more could you ask for?

Stardust is centrally located, so as a first coworking experience, it's very accessible.

1842 E Winter Park Rd, Orlando, FL 32803

Orlando Coworking

Coworking is cafe-like community/collaboration space for developers, writers and independents.

Or, it's like this: start with a shared office and add cafe culture. Which is the opposite of most modern cafes.

When & Where

Currently, Orlando Coworking meets every single Tuesday during the day at Stardust Video & Coffee off of Corrine Dr, betweeen Baldwin Park and 17-92.
1842 E Winter Park Rd, Orlando, FL 32803

A home page for coworking orlando, on the official coworking wiki.

wiki.coworking.info/CoworkingOrlando

Alex has also set up a coworking google group:

groups.google.com/group/coworking-orlando

CoLab Orlando

Angebuilt Building
37 N Orange Ave
6th Floor
Orlando, FL, 32801

The owner of a downtown office building is working with one of his tenants to turn an entire floor of the Angebuilt building into a coworking space. I'm not sure of the size, but if I had to guess I'd say it's close to 10,000 sq ft. There will be some ad-hoc space, conference space, and finally private offices available. They are still working on official numbers for rates and plans, which I think is one of the reasons for the open house.

I have seen the space, it is huge and versatile and I know the time is overdue for this space to open. I couldn't think of a better place - it is right in the middle of downtown, walking distance to everywhere, and the same building where we held our April 2008 BarCamp Orlando. Also upstairs is the current location of the UCF Downtown Technology Incubator, which helps tech startups get cheap office space downtown, and access to some other useful services.

http://colaborlando.com/

Jelly

There's also an idea that's "coworking without the office" called Jelly started in NYC by a couple of dudes who've gotten some press. It seems to me their philosphy is that one doesn't need to pay in order to have a coworking environment. Also, I think the laws in NYC about working together in the same space are different than most places, so having "work parties" was a way to get around legal problems.

jellynyc.pbwiki.com/

www.wired.com/techbiz/people/news/2007/07/coworking

BarCampOrlando Downtown April 5th and 6th, 10AM - 6PM

BarCamp Orlando is a weekend for all types of creative folks to come together and share with each other. The event is dubbed an "unconference", a format which derives power from the people instead of the event organizers or the presenters. Everyone has an equal opportunity to get on stage and speak, teach or lead a discussion, playing off of the idea that at any given conference, the people in the audience have more knowledge collectively than the presenter(s) on stage.

This second installment of BarCamp will be held over 2 days, Saturday and Sunday, April 5th and 6th, in downtown Orlando at the Wall Street complex, from 10AM - 6PM each day. Registration is free, and a registration promises a shirt and lunch on the sponsors of BarCamp, businesses who are passionate about the technology and media communities of Central Florida.

Saturday is the designated "Dev Day", playing host to everything from web programming to robot building and video game development and everything in between. iPhone hackers, guys with soldering irons, the latest technologies, and plenty that haven't been realized yet. Every 30 minutes, both venues will have a different talk going on, so if you're feeling lost in the jargon, apply the "rule of 2 feet" and check out what's happening in the other room!

Sunday is dubbed "Media Day", and is the place for storytellers, journalists, writers, designers, filmmakers, musicians, 2D and 3D artists, podcasters, bloggers and social networkers to show off their work, share their tricks or talk about the state of the industry. From 12 to 1 we will be talking about the "Past, Present and Future of Media in Central Florida", hoping to give our community a sense of our story, and where we're headed.

Registration is free, and the event runs from 10AM - 6PM both days with a lunch break at 1PM. The event will be housed in Slingapour's and One-Eyed-Jack's, with Wall St Cantina acting as our "hallway". There will be projectors and microphones, chairs and a space to speak. All you have to do is write your name on the whiteboard and you get 20-25 minutes to share your passions with a group of energetic, engaged geeks and creatives. I would not use the words "captive audience" to describe the BarCamp crowd, because they all want to get involved.

Visit www.barcamporlando.org today and register for Dev Day, Media Day or both days. Wall Street Plaza is at 18 Wall Street Plaza, Orlando, FL 32801 - barcamporlando.org/where has a map to the venue and information about parking.

Orlando Theatre Kids want Coworking Too

Over on the Orlando Sentinel Theatre blog, there has been a recent discussion about how to get Orlando's Theatre (and theater) community together. They decided on having a pot-luck dinner in a local theatre space, namely Mad Cow. The date is April 6th at 7PM, the same day as BarCamp Media Day, one hour after our event wraps up, right across the street from our event.

These thespians have the same desires and pains we do, and it's all been coming out out on Elizabeth Maupin's blog in the last few weeks, and then earlier today one of the actors made a big leap into Coworking land. I instantly recognized the model and ideals behind Coworking, which we at the Florida Creatives have been dedicated to realizing as a space as well as a community for some time.

Here's what Scott Sidler of Little Fin Creative Proposed:

    Brother & Sisters in Theatre,

There has been a lot of talk over the years about ways to strengthen our vast yet fractured theatre community here in the Greater Orlando area. After hearing so many "fixes" or temporary solutions to this peculiar problem I have rolled this challenge over and over in my mind and with lots of input from others I have come up with a proposed solution that I have been working on for some time. This is a co-operative solution which I do firmly believe can bring us all together as a community and allow us and our audiences to enjoy more and better theatre than we have previously been able to put forth. We can indeed be greater than the sum of our parts! Here is my vision.

    THE GREEN ROOM
The Green Room is a space that is centrally located. It is a theatre. It is a rehearsal studio. It is a coffee/wine/tapas style cafe. It is THE place where creative and artistically minded people of Orlando can come together to mingle, network, create, learn, research, produce and play. The Green Room is a theatrical co-op, if you will, with a year-round feel like a fringe festival. There is always something going on whether it is a cabaret, a new work of theatre, a dance concert, a class on puppeteering or a music festival.

But how can we, the poor theatrical masses, afford a place like this? Together! How many of you work with, know of, or have your own "homeless" production company? How many of you would love to have unlimited access to a space where you can bring your creative ideas to fruition? And how many of you would like to produce your own works of theatre, music, dance or anything in a location that every actor, musician, dancer, artist, critic, graphic designer and writer not only knows about but frequents for their morning coffee, afternoon snack or nightly spirits?

How do we afford this? Let's say there are 5 "Member-Companies" that pay $500/month and 50 "Individual Members" that pay $40/month. That equals $4500 a month in income to cover the expenses! And when you are a member you don't pay reduced fees for use of the space. You don't pay anything!! It is your theatre! The more members the less we all pay and the greater this theatre co-op can become.

This can take the shape that any of us desire! It changes with the needs of its members and is a truly flexible artistic entity. But before we can move forward with this I beg your indulgence. Since this will be a creation of its members I need to know what the members would like it to be. Below is a short questionnaire to determine the who, what, where and how of The Green Room. I encourage you to please answer the questions below to describe your thoughts and to let us know at Little Fin Creative if you would be interested in pledging your support to this endeavor. We don't need hard commitments at this point, simply an expression of genuine interest will do. Lastly, please forward this to as many people as you can who might be interested in this. Dance companies, theatre companies, production companies, actors, musicians, anyone. Post it on blogs, myspace, bulletin boards or wherever, so we can see if this idea can truly fly!

    Sincerely,
Scott Sidler
Little Fin Creative
PO Box 692204
Orlando, FL 32869
718-781-9847

If ye be a theatre type and checking out this blog, I urge you to head over to our Coworking Mailing List and start posting there. Please use the community tools that already exist.

We also have a Florida Creatives Happy Hour coming up this Monday at the Crooked Bayou - the details for this are always on the right sidebar of this page, but it helps to know that it always happens on the third Monday of the month at the Crooked Bayou, from 6-9PM. Crooked Bayou is just around the corner from the Mad Cow, where the pot-luck dinner will be taking place. No, really, it's just around the corner.

Update: This is also post #100 here on the blog. Nice timing.

Update 2: Gavin Baker left a comment pointing to another Orlando Sentinel blog post by Etan Horowitz. The Central Florida Computer Society is looking for meeting space for approximately 50 people on third Sundays of the month.

Coworking

Events This Week

Every month, tons of events happen in Orlando. We post lots of them on this site, and sometimes people attend. This month, our group or our members are planning some cool things:

Florida Creatives @ Enzian FilmSLAM (2008/03/09)

Second Sundays, Enzian has an event for local Florida filmmakers to showcase their work. It costs just $5 to get in, and you get to see a half-dozen or so new short films. At the end you get to vote on which one you think should get shown at the Brouhaha Grand Slam in December. Enzian even has food and drinks available because they don't want to hear grumbling tummies over the films.

Then we go across the street to Copper Rocket - you meet some filmmakers, some filmmakers meet all of us, we have fun.

FilmSlam - 3/9 1PM at Enzian
Happy Hour - 3/9 3PM at Copper Rocket

Florida Creatives @ OMA First Thursdays (2008/03/06)

On the first Thursday of the month, the Orlando Museum of Art opens their galleries up late and has a themed exhibit in the front room - the theme this month is "Beat-niks & Bongos: Abstract Art". I believe admission is $9 for non-members. There are food and drinks available for additional monies. 3/6 6-9PM at Loch Haven Park

First Thursdays are also when Dandelion CommuniTEA has their art openings, immediately following First Thursday. Dandelion is behind Colonial Photo and Hobby on Mills (they are on Thornton).

Coworking Tuesdays

This is a new event that will hopefully coalesce itself into tradition in the coming months. Anyone who works out of their living room is invited to work outside their living room by joining some other folks in the same boat every Tuesday... somewhere. A regular location will emerge, I'm sure. We had settled on B&S Daily Market, but Manny has admitted defeat and closed up shop. Watch this space, the Coworking Wiki and Coworking Mailing List for more details.

Florida Creatives Happy Hour (2008/03/17)

Yes, it comes around so quickly, doesn't it? We get together at the Crooked Bayou every month from 6-9 PM so you always have a place to meet new people and catch up with folks. It's important to our community to have these Third Places (not home or work/school) to gather and visit. If you've never been or you feel like it's been too ling since you've been around, there's never a better time to make a habit of attending.

This is the last Florida Creatives before BarCampOrlando goes down on April 5th & 6th, so you'll want to attend if you're interested in assisting with planning activities, passing out fliers or doing any other publicity. I also believe that will be the last week to find sponsors.

Florida Creatives

Coworking: Creative TreeHouse Pittsburgh

Creative TreeHouse is creative coworking studio that offers shared creative space, a meeting/event spot, and creative services to the Pittsburgh, PA area. This video is from an event they held some time ago where artists stayed up for 24 hours in the space and created original works from scratch around the theme of "Treehouse".

One of the goals of Florida Creatives is to open a similar space in Orlando. We can't do it without your help.
FLCreatives October Newsletter

Here's your last-minute reminder that the next Florida Creatives Happy Hour is TODAY, Monday, October 15th from 6 to 9 PM at the Crooked Bayou on Central downtown. Parking at all meters downtown is free after 6, and Crooked Bayou always has 2 for 1 drafts and wells until 7PM. If anyone wants to get there earlier than 6, I know a few people have expressed interest in showing up a little earlier to have time to eat. This month should be a great time if September's events (BlogOrlando, BarCamp) have done anything for filling people with the creative spirit.

THIS FRIDAY will be the next installment of Likemind.us coffee meetups at B&S Daily Market at 47 E Robinson from 8 - 11AM. Coffee and snacks are provided while supplies last.

Also, more of our creatives have been moving to downtown recently, namely Jason Hawkins, Meagan Fisher, Bill Couch and myself, though we don't all live together. I think this makes a "coworking-lite" experience like New York's "Jelly" and Philly's "Cream Cheese" much easier to facilitate. I've got a decent amount of space and parking for small groups, but there may be other people willing to donate their living rooms in the interest of having a quiet coworking-at-home experience. I'd like to talk to the office nomads in our group about a day of the week they prefer for having our version of jelly.

Florida Creatives will be having our one year anniversary in December, and I'm pretty sure we're going to make a special event of it by scheduling our monthly happy hour at Orlando Brewing and trying to schedule something special to get as many old participants as possible as well as new faces. If this means gathering sponsorships to buy everyone a drink or two and some food (Orlando brewing has a BYO-Food set-up), let's talk about who we can tap in the next two months.

I have a plan I'd like to get in motion that involves printing up several Florida Creatives posters featuring artwork and photography created by and featuring local creative talent as a way to promote our next year of events. We know where and when all the events will be happening, so it makes sense to give some of us a chance to brighten up the windows and bulletin boards of some of our favorite places in town with some local art as well as give people a visual reminder of who we are, what we're about, and when we come together. Anyone wishing to submit some design work, photos, or something else they've created should hop on the Wiki and click on the page for "poster campaign" so you can add yourself to the list. http://wiki.floridacreatives.com/index.php/FLCreatives_poster_campaign

So much more to talk about, but that's plenty for now. See you tonight at Crooked Bayou!

Likemind

In the Press: Orlando Coworking

We've been pushing coworking at Florida Creatives since day 1, and seeing the healthy growth of Florida Creatives also means we can start promoting and acting on some of the ideas we had at the beginning: holding events (BarCamp, BlogOrlando, Creative Summit), organizing Coworking, finding jobs for and sharing work with community members, helping entrepreneurs get in touch with resources and fostering a community that is welcoming of everyone and encourages growth.

Thanks to Etan Horowitz for writing the article and getting coworking out there to the community. Getting printed in the paper raises the caché of the idea with people trying to find more information and pushes the same words through several filters so they're easier to get your head around.

The trend has its roots in the open source software movement, which encourages free sharing of software and Web sites such as Wikipedia that are modified and improved on by a community of users.

It also has received a boost by social networking sites such as Facebook, which make it easier to organize meetings and find people in a local area with similar interests.

In Orlando, efforts to start a co-working space are still in their infancy, but [Ryan] Price and other organizers have been laying the groundwork for the past year with regular meetups at coffee shops and bars.

Alex Rudloff, Erik Hersman and John Rife also get mentions and quotes in the article. Go check it out, Co-working can solve non-traditional office issues.

Don't think about exporting the culture of Silicon Valley

Chris Messina is one of the thought leaders behind some of the concepts we here at Florida Creatives subscribe to: Coworking and BarCamp are the big ones. He made a great post today that seemed to be writing itself in my head as I was reading it. The short version is this: We don't want to be like San Francisco. It's true. My idea is that we want to be a better Orlando, or Tampa, or South Florida. See what Chris has to say about it here, but please visit his blog and read the rest of the post.

From FactoryCity » On exporting the culture of Silicon Valley

people don’t have to be alone in their progressive thinking, the question seems to quickly become: “So what happens next? How do we create our own Silicon Valley here?”

Well, I’m here to tell you that the next thought should be, “Oh wait, what we want isn’t to become another Silicon Valley with all their disfunctions and navel-gazing — what we really want is a community that is self-sustaining and a culture of sharing, opportunity and hope…!” Of course, that’s a harder proposition and reality to accept and to create, but if you really want a slice of the Bay, you might as well take the one that’s not just covered with whipped cream.

Where I’ve seen this work, people are collaborating, are open, are sharing, are working together and building something that is defined from within, rather than from without. It’s not about imitating what you think we have out here; it’s about creating and instituting an attitude and mentality that shares the same philosophical underpinnings that allow us to define success for ourselves and then go about achieving it, however we best can.

I doubt I could have said it better myself. At this point, we've all heard the arguments that "our scene isn't supportive" or "the audiences are lazy" or "I can't find anyone to share this thought with me". The argument against all of those points is "figure out how to inspire support", "ask more people", "try it out sooner, fail sooner, learn how to be better sooner". Set some goals and a system to measure success, and don't think of yourself as failing until you've really taken stock of what you're trying to accomplish.

The next 3 weeks are going to see a huge upheaval for the internal and external image of Orlando and Florida in the eyes of the world. Don't believe me? Then you won't be seeing the same change I know is coming until it's already passed you by. All the ingredients are here. All the creatives, audience members, investors, consultants and catalysts are in the petri dish, now all we have to do is raise the temperature.

Coworking Survey from Ireland

The Coworking Ireland blog linked to us last week, so I decided I'd like to return the favor. Not only that, but they've got some really great statistics from a recent survey. For the rest of the results, read the full post.

What would attract you most to coworking?

Interaction with like-minded individuals was top of the agenda with 46.51%. While sharing the cost of an office space and the ability to collaborate and pool resources both came in at 18.60%. This is an interesting tidbit as its shows the cost of a space does not directly out way [sic] the ability to collaborate with others.

The Structure of a dedicated working [space] was low on the agenda with only 9.30% and the ability to network with others only received 4.65%.

For those of you not in the loop, Coworking is a concept centered around people working in related fields all sharing a space to work, collaborate and gather. Some people will be there full time and pay rent accordingly, while others will float and pay something more like a gym membership. Coworking spaces are wehre the Office Nomads and Pajama Warriors of the world will feel at home.

A major initiative of our group here at Florida Creatives is to find spaces like this close to us and create some of our own. If you don't believe me, search for coworking on this blog or links tagged coworking on our Ma.gnolia group.

Orlando coworking mentioned in WIRED

Some time ago, I was cruising the Coworking wiki and I saw some info about Jelly, which is essentially "living room coworking". I remember making an edit to the wiki at the time and adding Orlando and a link here or an email to invite people over for Jelly at my place, but I can't even find that entry now.

Nonetheless, as Anna Jane Grossman was writing this article about NYC Jelly for wired.com, she must have stumbled across a message that had my post. Here's a little of the article:

Freelancers Forgo Office Space for Casual Coworking

Every other Thursday, these twenty-something web workers take over Gupta's dormlike apartment. They use his wireless connection, tap away at their computers and occasionally converse. Gupta, who runs the website and newsletter Photojojo, operates as the resident host-cum-office manager.

Jelly meetings are a way for folks who usually work at home to get out of the house, find kindred workers to collaborate with, or simply to socialize -- without having to commit to the gym-like membership setup of most of the country's coworking arrangements, where rented office spaces feel much like a traditional workplace and require a regular financial commitment beyond the means of most freelancers. Indeed, the term "office" can happily be avoided all together with Jelly. Unlike most coworking setups, Jelly exists for only one day every other week, and it's free.

Gupta's Jelly was the first, but in the last year, similarly named gatherings have popped up in cities throughout the world, from London to Austin to Orlando. One might say it's a swing of the pendulum for many freelancers, who are learning that what they imagined would be a life of freedom working in their pajamas often translates into lonely, 18-hour days in a cramped apartment.

I think Alex and Josh's idea of "Brown Bag Lunch" sort of falls into this category, but I wouldn't call it an official Jelly. I'll be moving much closer to downtown in a month or two and I hope to have some nice spaces available. Anyone out there want to Jelly? The Philly people called theirs Cream Cheese, ours could be Marmalade...?

Video: Coworking Philly: Independents Hall

At Likemind.orl on Friday, a few of us Coworking types discussed the idea of creating a video along the lines of "Hey, city council! Give us a coworking space!" Here's a video of a newly erected space in Philadelphia, which I saw on the Coworking Blog. Let's talk about making ourselves a video tomorrow. If you can't make it, make a post to the mailing list with your thoughts.

Visit our coworking facility at 32 Strawberry St in Old City Philadelphia

We're open 8:30am-6:00pm Monday thru Saturday. Stop on by! We're free until September 1st, which is our big grand opening party!

http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/239893/ to RSVP

Apologies for the fast talking, I've been thriving on caffeine!

Music used without permission from Huey Lewis and the News, and Philadelphia's own IKE. If Huey or IKE wants, I'll take it out. But I love both of them so I hope not.

Acte de Naissance - "le Créateur"

That means (I think) Birth Certificate - "The Creators". Larry Diehl just wrote a post over at the BarCampOrlando blog called "Orlando's Web Renaissance", but Renaissance really means "rebirth". I don't think the world has ever issued us with a creative birth certificate in the first place. I will agree that we're participating in a rebirth of culture, and enabling technologies have quite a bit to do with that, but enablers are nothing without the people to enable.

I think one thing that was missing from Larry's post (and I'm not sure how he could have done this, I'm just trying to illustrate a point) is the knowledge (or faith) of what will be happening at BarCamp and these other upcoming events.

We get mentioned just after he lists all of the discipline-specific groups, and then a bit later on he gives a nice plug to the new FloridaCreatives Wiki. By the way, if you haven't added anything yet, shame on you! If you feel left out, please don't, because when I first populated the list I didn't really know what it was going to look like a few hours later, and I'm still not sure I have it right yet... getting it right will take lots of input from everyone who cares about improving or bringing together the community.

It's very interesting to think that the day I created the wiki was just days past 9 months since our first Florida Creatives Happy Hour. Instead of waiting for someone to authorize our birth certificate, we're taking matters into our own hands.
