I've had a few folks hem and haw about coming to Florida Creatives Happy Hour because we meet in a bar. they are uncomfortable being around drinkers. I always assure them that it's not a big drunken mess.
Can we do anything to help foster the family atmosphere, but keep to the core values? Socializing is pretty much priority 1, and creating a space for people and other meeting organizers to get together to make plans or hash out community stuff is invaluable.
There's lots more to say about this topic, but I just want to get the discussion going.
People drink at any public
People drink at any public establishment where there are kids around. I don't think it honestly matters where you go.
No bars? Huh?
No bars? Huh?
I think we should absolutely
I think we should absolutely think about meeting in other places. When I lived in Portland (I'm now in Jacksonville for those who don't know me) there was a group, similar to FL Creatives that met at a different bar each month. As it became more popular it simply turned into a place where unemployed web designers could hook up. Killed it. Going to a bar all the time seems obvious to me. Convenient, but obvious. Why not go for milkshakes, fudge, or whatever?
Depends on what you want to
Depends on what you want to get out of the meeting. If the point of the meeting is to network & socialize, a bar is fine.
If you're to talk about something as a group or plan something as a group, I'd recommend a more quiet environment where everyone can be heard.
As long as there is room, we
As long as there is room, we should stay put. Once we get a little bigger, than moving it to a different place is a good idea.
