Into Coworking? Make stuff? Are you a writer? Looking for a space to hold events? Hoping to have a decent place to work, collaborate, and meet downtown? You should fill out this survey. urbanrethink

In March of 2010, after eight years as a community bookstore in downtown Orlando and Thornton Park, the Urban Think! Bookstore closed its doors, leaving as its legacy the Urban Think! Foundation. The Foundation believes that when creativity flourishes, the community benefits, and through its mission to enrich Orlando's cultural landscape the Foundation is working to re-think the bookstore space as a creative center serving the Orlando community. Please join us in helping shape the future of the former bookstore by filling out this short survey to assess how this new space might serve you.

New Media Orlando Meetup

Location

Stardust Video and Coffee
1842 E Winter Park Rd
Orlando, FL 32803
Community or Meetup:
Jun 15 2010 6:00p

This group is for talking about the future of News, new business models around Media, like blogging, podcasting, video, and other emerging mobile, streaming or downloadable content.

Our meeting last month allowed everyone to have "the floor" for 5 minutes, and there were a lot of common themes. If you have a particular topic you'd like to bring up, leave a comment on this event page.

Michael Poley is producing a Comedy Video night related to his project. If anyone would like to submit a video or help out with the event, check it out. It will be held on June 24th at the Avalon Gallery (formerly DMAC, AKA the Green Building).

Orlando has a very wide distribution of journalists, podcasters and bloggers, as well as the amateurs. What will happen if we get them all in the same room?

Jessica Mariko may be familiar to Florida Creatives members because of her appearance at Ignite Orlando last year. This May, Jessica (of Drip) and Linda Eve Elchak will be asking local creative types to make something from a single source of inspiration, created originally, to be performed during the 2010 Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival at Loch Haven Park, from May 20-31st.

I brought up the idea of having a local news producers meetup at BarCamp, and we all had some good discussions about projects we'd like to start or finish.

Matt Sokolof, Michael Poley and I hosted a discussion out on the patio about Local News. A few folks were very active contributors, like Brenda Young from Tampa, Kieth Barret from Disney, and Daniel Jaye, who now works for a company called Ad Summos, and is Matt's boss.

Someone said "when is the meetup"? I said pick a date, and a place, we'll organize it.

Well here it is.

Topic? How about a one-month post-mortem on the iPad. Has anything really changed in a month? Can anyone bring in numbers from their web analytics showing adoption? Or for folks who have created applications, what effects have been seen to date?

Want more films made in Florida?

Good luck with that. Someone on Facebook named Robert Spencer created "a group to inspire film makers and investors to do more than just think about making films here in Florida". I believe the operative word is think. Robert would like to see action, and as of this post, so do nearly 700 others. Filmmakers in Florida have some great opportunities, and this group is intended to highlight funding, I suppose.

I bet we can find 1,000,000+ people who want more films made in Florida

With the Florida Film Festival coming up soon, there could be some opportunities to meet the right people and make some awesome things happen.
