CoLab's $49 Deal Extended Through December

I've spent several days in November at CoLab, Orlando's first coworking space, mostly because of the $49 deal announced for November, and because of the fact that desk fees are temporarily waived for Tuesdays. Personally, I can walk there from my house, and there's lots of good coffee and food on the way, so it's all pretty nice.

I noticed in a recent email from Fredda that the $49 deal is extended through December 2008, which makes things simpler for your Holiday and Travel budget. It's the same as paying for about 3 days of regular desk time, so as long as you spend 3 days there, it's still a deal, but you can in fact spend 5 days a week there for this super-low price, which is an 80% discount off the regular full-time rate. Serious.

Be on the lookout for a CoLab party announcement as well. Should be exciting.

First Steering Committee Meeting

You are hereby invited to the first ever Florida Creatives Steering Committee meeting - this is not a Board of Directors, as there is nobody to direct. Participation is voluntary, and the agenda is flexible, but it's long past time for this group to achieve something closer to its full potential.

UPDATE: This first meeting will be a conference call on Tuesday evening, December 9th at ?6PM You are also welcome to be there in person. Email me for the location. <del>The penciled in date is Monday the 8th at 6PM -</del> the idea is to have it about 1 week before the regular Happy Hour, so we have some time to get things done and then check back in at our regularly scheduled conversation time with all our friends.

<del>We will be meeting at my home. I'm going to bake some pizzas and buy some beers. I eat out enough, and we can discuss future meeting places while we conduct this first meeting.</del>

I plan on plunking the microphones in the middle of the room and opening up a Skype call in case anyone can't be there in person. The username is PFAlliance. You might also be able to call 321-441-3964, or have me call your land line / mobile so I can conference everyone in on Skype.

Email rprice AT ryanpricemedia.com or reply to this thread for more information. Join this group (Steering Committee) for future updates.

What's on the agenda? How about:

Shirts and Buttons, Posters

Future Events

501c3 status / incorporation? pro vs. con

High School and College outreach, and beyond

Non-profit & Volunteering

Reaching out beyond the tech community

Our role in User Groups, BarCamp, the State of Florida

The FloridaCreatives website - good info, that's about it...

Calls to action for our members - blog badges, outreach, instilling ownership & responsibility

Where/when to have future meetings, what to accomplish and why we may need this committee

Florida Creatives

Grandma Party Craft Bazaar

Start: 12/21/2008 - 10:00

End: 12/21/2008 - 17:00

Timezone: Etc/GMT-4

There is normally very little information about Grandma Party ANYWHERE on the internet (when I google for it, stuff from about 3 authors turns up, and I'm one of them)... therefore, I will let previous coverage speak for itself.

Grandma Party from Jason Hawkins on Vimeo.

There is the Grandma Party Hotline, which you can call in to, and listen at your own risk.

The event itself is always awesome. There will be live music, RAFFLES, interactive exhibits like a YouTube video booth, a baloon pool or a small plastic tent where a band plays. You really never know what your are going to see, just that it will be original. Parking will be insane, since they hold the event in the parking lot, you have to find street parking or hope the ABC Liquor people don't tow you.

One of the only pieces I could find about this Winter's event comes to us via The Daily City blog:

Grandma Party Bazaar (part six) will be a-happenin’ on the shortest day of 2008, Sunday December 21st at Stardust from about 10am until magic hour and beyond.

First of all I want to express how a-mazing its been watching Grandma Party grow grow grow since the first bazaar in December 2005. Every time I am more and more impressed with the things that everyone is making and doing. So thank you thank you thank you for being so crafty and motivated and awwwwwwsooooome!

However, I have also noticed that Grandma Party has drifted a bit from its original intention of being a gathering of artists and crafters selling their handmade goods.
In an effort to bring us back to that I have a few guidelines and suggestions for possible vendors. Check it out:

All vendors (for the most part, see below) MUST be selling handcrafted items. This can be anything you want as long as you MAKE it. Or if your friends make it, that’s ok too.

I do realize that creating beautiful vintage collections is an art in itself, and the truth is that people like buying vintage clothes. That being said I will allow 3 vintage dealers. Other vendors may have a small collection of vintage at their booths as well, so long as it is NOT the majority of what they are selling.

Your old stuff (old clothes, books, movies, etc…) is NOT allowed UNLESS it has been artistically altered. If you have old stuff that you are looking to get rid of donate it to the rummage pile or have a yard sale.

Interactive booths are highly encouraged!!!!! At past bazaars this has included the photo booth, songs while you wait, youtube video upload booth, tarot, henna, massage…. And in the future could include awesome things like a kissing booth, art projects for kids, face painting, collaborative art, and who knows what else.

If you intend on raising money for a charity or doing volunteer work through your booth please let us know. This is super awesome and we will most likely be into advertising your cause.

So now you know.

One of the only pieces I could find about this Winter's event comes to us via The Daily City blog: Grandma Party Bazaar (part six) will be a-happenin’ on the shortest day of 2008, Sunday December 21st at Stardust from about 10am until magic hour and beyond. Check it out: All vendors (for the most part, see below) MUST be selling handcrafted items.
First time here?

Every month, a group that samples Orlando's forward-thinkers, inventors, entrepreneurs and future front-page makers gets together to chat and catch up over some cajun food and drink downtown at the Crooked Bayou on Central Ave and Magnolia. We get started at 6PM and go until 9PM or later most months.

Florida Creatives Happy Hours are the third Monday of the month in Orlando - the next meeting will be this Monday, November 17th. You can get more information about this event and future goings-on around Orlando and Florida at www.FloridaCreatives.com

Our group also plays host to an international monthly event called Likemind. The event is held over morning coffee in over 50 cities around the world on the third Friday of the month: Orlando has had Likemind for about 2 years now, and we meet downtown at the Lake Eola Panera Bread starting at 8AM. The next Likemind is November 5th. Likemind was also recently featured in the New York Times, which you can read about on our website.

FloridaCreatives.com also hosts a variety of other features, like a monthly podcast which profiles notable members of our community, and we have 2 years worth of archives hiding behind our Podcast link at the top of the page.

We highly encourage you to register for the site - the immediate benefit is email updates for any new front page posts, as well as comments. We also have a number of groups, like the Brevard and Jacksonville groups, or interest-based groups like Graphics Hackers. You can join as many groups as you like, and you are welcome to post Articles, Events, Wiki Pages, Polls, Podcasts and Forum Posts to any group, including the main Florida Creatives Group.

The Florida Creatives Wiki aims to be a comprehensive resource for anyone seeking information related to living and working as a creative professional in Florida - we've got a list of open wifi hotspots, a list of Networking Events and User Groups, a directory of useful local Websites, Businesses, Schools, Blogs, and lots more. You can also add pages or modify existing pages to make the resource better for everyone.

On our Events page you can find a calendar of events which our users have posted to our site, as well as a feed of events aggregated and collated from other groups around Central Florida. Once you are registered, adding an event is as simple as clicking a link in the sidebar and typing some basic information.

In the future, we are also working on a way to showcase the work of our members by allowing them to upload samples of their work in a directory. We also welcome your feedback as to what sorts of benefits you'd like to get out of a community like this.

I hope you can be excited as I am about everything one can get out of putting a small amount of effort in. First and foremost is always the face-to-face interactions we have at monthly meetings and the relationships that are formed there.

CoLab Orlando is Open!

Greetings Coworkers!

CoLab Orlando is our first Coworking space in Central Florida, and I believe the second one in Florida, after Brikolodge in Miami. I am sitting in the space right now as I write this post.

CoLab is laid out with a general admission area as well as some private suites for rent. I believe the anchor rate will be $250 once this gets swinging, but for November, they have announced a monthly rate of $49, which I was happy to pay.

A full list of rates and amenities should be available over at CoLabOrlando.com

They are also offering a 3-day-a-week price for $175, and a day-rate of $15 once you pay your $25 for the first day. Both the full-time and 3-day prices get you first class access to the conference room.

It's been a long journey - it was just over 2 years ago that I first met Alex Rudloff and he made his first post to this list. Now we have John Hussey, the owner of the historic Angebilt Building here downtown to thank for providing this space to being Orlando's past and future together.

The space is at:
37 N Orange Ave
Suite 600 (most of the 6th floor)
Orlando, FL 32801

John and his marketing staff, Fredda and Jane, have set up a Facebook account for CoLab.

As well as a twitter feed @colaborlando

CoLab is already on the Coworking Map on Google, so that's always good times. The Coworking Wiki page also has some info about CoLab.

That's all for today, I am excited to be here, and we hope to see you soon!

Florida Creatives Happy Hour 24

Start: 11/17/2008 - 18:00

End: 11/17/2008 - 21:00

Timezone: Etc/GMT-4

Every single 3rd Monday for the past 23 3rd Mondays, a group of geeks, artists, writers and other creative types have been gathering in Orlando for a networking event otherwise unheard of in this part of the country.

Come and meet some likeminded folks - people who are always learning, working to change the world, looking to create something new, or people who just like being social.

Folks from a wide variety of jobs - designers, poets, programmers, entrepreneurs, bloggers, podcasters, painters, filmmakers, musicians, actors - plus plenty of friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, wives, husbands, and acquaintances get together for some delicious Cajun/Creole food (and the ever-popular hot tots and fried pickles), beverages, and discussion.

Thanks for 2 awesome years of your input, ideas, friendship and support. This group is reaching a new plateau, it is entirely due to our members, whom we ask little of, but who give us so much.

Admission is free, there is no sign-up form, there are no nametags, just come and be yourself, and the creatives will guide you from there!

Florida Creatives

Likemind.orl

Start: 12/05/2008 - 00:00

End: 12/05/2008 - 11:00

Timezone: Etc/GMT-4

From a recent New York Times article on Likemind:
a monthly kaffeeklatsch for creative professionals, held in 55 cities around the world, including Mumbai, São Paulo, Shanghai, and Malmo, Sweden.

Likemind gatherings have no formal structure, no fees and typically no agenda. But participants exchange ideas, job tips and useful contacts, while also batting around ideas about technology, art, business and culture.

Likemind might sound like a 2008 version of networking, but to participants, likemind events are distinctly different from the traditional networking parties of the ’80s and ’90s, where slick-suited would-be executives teetered around with a cocktail in one hand and a fistful of business cards in the other.

Likemind caters to young professionals in advertising, media and design who are products of the age of personal blogs, warts-and-all YouTube videos and viral marketing. For them, the best pitch is the disguised pitch. Nothing, participants said, is more uncool than the hard-sell of traditional networking (which may explain why likemind is not capitalized).

“We just show up over coffee and talk,” said Eric Cedo, a participant in Detroit

17th Annual
BROUHAHA FILM & VIDEO SHOWCASE

Saturday and Sunday
DECEMBER 6 & 7, 2008

From its humble beginnings, Brouhaha has quietly grown to become one of the premier outlets for locally produced films and videos, the best work from film schools statewide, and a fun-filled gathering for lovers of independent film. Audiences are made up of filmmakers, film educators, local production representatives, industry organization members, and the general public, all fascinated by the scope and creativity of films screened each year representing the entire spectrum of Florida's immense talent pool. The 2008 Brouhaha Film & Video Showcase will take place on December 6 & 7, 2008.

Originally a project of University of Central Florida's Downtown Media Arts Center, Enzian Theater became the home of FilmSlam when DMAC closed in 2006. Now in its second year at Enzian, FilmSlam continues to be a popular outlet for indie and student filmmakers throughout the State of Florida.

FilmSlam will be held on the second Sunday of each month at 1:00 PM at Enzian Theater.

Questions? E-mail John for answers.

ENTRY FEE

Entry into the FilmSlam is FREE (and open only) to all Florida Filmmakers. There is a $5.00 admission fee to the monthly screenings so that the filmmakers do not have to pay an entry fee! Tell your friends to come support indie film!

DEADLINE

Early entry is strongly encouraged. Submissions must be received by the FIRST OF THE MONTH in order to be considered for that month's event - NO EXCEPTIONS! A well-written, 25-word synopsis of the basic plot and premise of the work(s) is required with each entry. If available, b/w and color promotional stills should be sent or e-mailed to Betsy.

SCHEDULING

Works are scheduled at the discretion of Enzian Theater and the FilmSlam programmers. Enzian retains the right to make changes to the published schedule at any time and for any reason.

Brevard East Coast Meetup

Start: 12/04/2008 - 19:00

End: 12/04/2008 - 21:30

Timezone: Etc/GMT-4

1st (or 2nd depending) meetup of the Brevard East Coast Creatives.

Please bring a canned food donation, $20 registration fee, and a list of your favorite websites.

KIDDING! Bring nothing but yourself. Come as you are or... well, you know the drill. Come late, come early. Leave late, leave early.

It's fully casual. No agenda. Discuss any or all of the following with some good chow to boot.

* The Web Business
* Marketing to Businesses
* Good business / Bad business around town
* What's shakin', What's movin.
* Horrible clients and how to avoid them
* Why the web/marketing/creative world will end because "your guy" lost in November.

Hey, we really don't care - as you can plainly see. Got 5 tips on saving money on a used car? We're all ears. Got ideas for future meetings? Bring it! Got a list of the Top 500 movies ever made? Well.... okay, maybe that's going too far. But Wikipedia is all over that so type away!

Bring a friend - or a foe.

The only rule is that all are welcome.

Here's a few of the peeps I'd like to meet or have a chance to discuss things with if I can make it this time. I'd like to know if anyone is using a CMS (content management system) for their clients, how they like it, what they use, what they don't like. I'd like to find out what systems folks are using to manage leads and client workflow (I have my own that I'll share, but I'd like to hear other's ideas as well). I'd like to see how folks are faring with this recent economy. Are businesses holding back more? Are they jumping in too late (i.e. "save my business with your advertising or web campaign, even though I should have done this three years ago").. what's your take? I'd like to see if folks are starting to wear thin on social networks and media. Is it killing your productivity? Are you getting business from it? Is LinkedIn the new Facebook? Or vice-versa? And of course, I'd like a ton of feedback, ideas, and hopefully some "leaders" to come forth on all things Florida Creatives, esp. as it pertains to our little Space Coast chapter here.

BTW, according to their "website" (i.e. MySpace page, cough, cough), Grill 192 now has free wifi. So if you want to get there a bit early or stay late and do some work, sounds like that could work out now. Save us a table. There's some big tables in back and one 8 or 10-top right to the left when you walk in. It's about 3.2 feet from 40mph traffic whizzing by, so that could add a bit of exhilaration to our meetup.

P.S. We'll normally meet the last Thursday of each month, but the last Thursday of November is Thanksgiving and although F/C is clearly more important than Thanksgiving, we're going to capitulate to the weaker members who apparently "need" that family time and move this one to the first Thursday in December - sort of a combo Nov/Dec meetup. Our next meetup won't be until the last Thursday of January, so try and make it. Should be fun.

Hello World

Hi,
My name is Cory, and I've been lurking around the site for quite a while now. Don't be confused though, you've probably met me at any one of the Florida Creatives events at the Bayou. Anytime I can have a Guinness and Cajun food, I'm in.

I won't bore all of you with the details of me and who I am. Rather, I'd like to expand on something I wrote in a comment earlier about community involvement in Central Florida. I had mentioned that instead of bickering amongst each other, like politicians getting votes with negative ads, we should try to work together, where appropriate.

Well, I got to thinking about that, and I couldn't come up with a whole lot of grandiose ideas on how to make that happen. I'm not much of a leader. I, like Ryan, always liked being just below the top guy in command. I'm happiest as the 'right-arm-guy'. So, yeah, I couldn't think of a way to help everyone else out.

What I was able to think of though, is my own efforts. I guess, in my own way, that's helping out the creative scene in Central Florida. Those of you who know me, can stop reading now, cause I'm gonna plug my project.

Florida Death Metal

I've setup the domain, and I'm the sole content writer for the site. I don't want to be the only person writing content. It really shouldn't be my project. I had the idea, and I could use some help.

So, that's my plea. I'd like to help build the community in the one of the few ways I know how; Blisteringly fast, brutally horrific death metal! Anyone who's into the scene is welcome to contact me. I'd love to get some more folks involved.

What does FloridaCreatives.com need?

We have had quite a few new registrations on the site recently, and therefore I'm sure a lot of confused folks -- there is a lot that can be done on this website, but it doesn't all jump out at a new user.

How can we communicate the following:

What is Florida Creatives all about?

What can you find on this site?

What can you find on other sites around the internet?

How can you contribute to this site, and why would you want to?

When is the next event, not just for our group, but all the groups listed here.

What kind of work are our members doing?

...your own special intentions? What are you looking to get out of a site like this?

Once we know what we need to communicate and how, then we can talk about pulling it together with some design elements, which will be part 2 of this discussion.

Florida Creatives

WiiToMidi allows you to convert signals from a Nintendo Wii controller to MIDI signals. It is a Cocoa application for Mac OS X and uses the DarwiinRemote WiiRemote framework to decode Wii controller signals. It also supports the Nunchuk controller.
Likemind in the New York Times

Alex Williams, a New York Times reporter, sent out a request through the Likemind organizers mailing list asking a few questions about the event that has grown to be an international affair every month. Here is a sample of his article:

To Erin Middleton, a 27-year-old brand strategist in Dallas, the word “networking” calls to mind “stodgy business types in suits,” who are “very uncomfortable and poor at engaging conversation,” she said in an e-mail message.

Melissa Clark, an advertising account manager in Minneapolis, said there is “something smarmy” about the word.

Peter Bihr, 28, a media consultant in Berlin, was even stronger in his denunciation. “ ‘Networking,’ as a word, makes me feel like I get a physical reaction, I hate the term so much,” he wrote in an e-mail message. “It sounds all like strategically talking to people and trying to be their friends. It’s not authentic.”

So, what exactly, are these three doing at 8 a.m. on the third Friday of each month, meeting with other young professionals at their local coffeehouse?

They are participating in likemind, a monthly kaffeeklatsch for creative professionals, held in 55 cities around the world, including Mumbai, São Paulo, Shanghai, and Malmo, Sweden.

Read the rest of the Likemind article on the New York Times' website

The article calls out the no-agenda, no-hard-sell nature of Likemind, the differences with Meetup.com events, the similarity to Unconferences, or Green Drinks, and even gives some literary reference.

Our next Likemind in Orlando (or anywhere else) will be Friday, December 5th. Jim Hathaway and Ryan Price are the co-organizers of the Orlando Likemind.

If you work in marketing, design, advertising, or something more squirrely, please check out Likemind, the conversation and the coffee are never cold, and always welcome in the morning.<!--break-->

October 30 Meetup at 7pm?

Hey all Brevardians!

I'm sorry I've been off the charts. Some sudden changes in my weekly plans about two months ago threw me for a loop. I'm completely booked Mon-Thurs nights so there's just no way I can make a Thurs meeting between now and the new year.

I was sort of hoping that someone else would take the bull by the horn and just go with it. While I'd miss getting a chance to meet some of you awesome folks, the whole point isn't about one person anyway. If any of you have followed the Orlando threads, you might have seen Ryan Price having to defend himself against accusations of being "synonymous" with Florida Creatives. Although it's a ridiculous assertion anyway, I guess I won't have to worry about that here in Brevard since I've completely fallen off the wagon... ha ha.

So, all that's really left to do is just set a date and just hold a meetup, a get-to-know-ya little icebreaker. Before we know it the holidays will be here and we'll all be swamped with the usual shenanigans that they so often bring.

I'm thinking October 30, Thursday at 7pm at Grill 192 (mentioned previously in the thread if you're new to the group). If this works out, maybe the last Thursday of each month would be our normal meet time for the foreseeable future.

This would also be good because it won't conflict with the RAnDOM group meeting on the 3rd Thursdays of each month. That's mostly Ruby developers, but I know a few of you are going to that (they had a good report on their last meetup last week reported here.

Feedback anyone? Let's make it happen. I'm sorry I won't be able to attend for the first few meetings, but everyone has been so great to join and get involved, I'd hate to see it drag out because of me.

Would anyone like to volunteer as a the go-to guy or gal on this? I'd be very appreciative.
