Orlando PHP Meets at Stardust

There was some lively discussion at Stardust Video & Coffee this Tuesday, where the Orlando PHP group had its monthly meeting. The table was opened up for discussion about where the group wanted to head in the future, at which several ideas surfaced and were discussed.

David Rogers suggested doing Pecha Kucha style presentations during group meetings. Pecha Kucha is a technique by which a speaker creates 20 slides, each which will be shown for 20 seconds during the presentation. Some suggestions for future presentations include talks on how PHP can be used in conjunction with other applications written in languages such as Ajax or Flex. Derek Gallo suggested that a presentation could be done on a comparison of different frameworks (like Zend) to show the similarities and differences and to provide information on which platforms would be best used for certain purposes.

Bensan George suggested that the group take on a community project that could be contributed to by both novice and seasoned PHP programmers. The project could be used to benefit a non-profit or not-for-profit organization and provide opportunities for interaction and collaboration within the development community. One outlet that was discussed was to use the orlandophp.org as a platform for group projects, and Erik Marden expressed his opinion that the creation of the site could produce open-source material that could be used in the wider community.

The evening’s main presentation was “PHP Basics”, created by Chris Chubb. (David Rogers covered the presentation, as Chris was unable to be present.) The talk covered Anatomy of a Web Request, PHP Syntax, Comments on Code, Variables, Language Constructs, Data Types, Data Type Conversions, Variable Scope, Constants, and Operator Precedence.

Orlando PHP normally meets on the first Thursday of every month. (This month was an exception due to the holiday.) Next month, Erik Marden will be doing a Pecha Kucha style presentation on “Anatomy of a WordPress Site”.

Be ready to participate - come with an idea for a session you can lead. You don’t have to be an expert at your topic; as long as it’s not too specific, there’ll probably be someone else present who can help you out. You can also contribute to the conversation during a session. This is a great way to participate, since it spreads knowledge from everyone, instead of just the leader.
Know someone who would like to sponsor or be a donor? Sponsorships are $300 and donor level is $100 so that even startups can contribute on a monetary level to keeping this a free, grassroots community event.

History

If we start having more than 15 people consistently turn up to these things, we'll have to look elsewhere for a venue, I think. Packing the whole lot into Stardust with all the other customers is a little difficult, and we still have no projector! Any one have any additional suggestions?

From a recent New York Times article on Likemind:
a monthly kaffeeklatsch for creative professionals, held in 55 cities around the world, including Mumbai, São Paulo, Shanghai, and Malmo, Sweden.

Likemind gatherings have no formal structure, no fees and typically no agenda. But participants exchange ideas, job tips and useful contacts, while also batting around ideas about technology, art, business and culture.

Likemind might sound like a 2008 version of networking, but to participants, likemind events are distinctly different from the traditional networking parties of the ’80s and ’90s, where slick-suited would-be executives teetered around with a cocktail in one hand and a fistful of business cards in the other.

Likemind caters to young professionals in advertising, media and design who are products of the age of personal blogs, warts-and-all YouTube videos and viral marketing. For them, the best pitch is the disguised pitch. Nothing, participants said, is more uncool than the hard-sell of traditional networking (which may explain why likemind is not capitalized).

2009 is going to be a big year for Florida Creatives, and this month's happy hour is going to be the kick-off to a lot of that activity. We are starting a monthly conference call for a steering committee, so look at floridacreatives.com for more details.

This group is dedicated to building a creative identity for Florida, and helping our community develop a sense of ownership and fostering traditions. For all you spring chickens, the Backroom Words was one of the longest-running open mikes in Orlando. Before Speakeasy (hell, before the Iraq War) PSB was holding it down. The Backroom Words was and shall be the night with the highest potential for nudity of any open mic in town. Sorry about your New Year's sobriety resolutions.

The Economist recently had a short piece about the opportunities and pitfalls in Obama’s plan to make massive investments in infrastructure projects. The writer observes that the US has historically underinvested in infrastructure, while the projects that are carried out are funded in a haphazard manner through Congressional member items with little or no federal oversight or planning.

In our current rush to stimulate the economy by funding many projects as quickly as possible, it's more important than ever that we have a coherent strategy to ensure that infrastructure spending is really an investment in economic growth instead of just a way to provide some short-term jobs. Part of that strategy should include targeted investments aimed at bolstering the creative sector.

The arts are an unparalleled driver of economic development, especially in cities. A vibrant cultural sector brings quality-of-life improvements that attract knowledge workers from other industries, increases the property tax base, and attracts tourism dollars. (Yes, gentrification is a concern, but it's a problem that can be mitigated with responsible planning.) And if "bang for the buck" is a serious consideration -- which it should be -- then we could do worse than to invest in an industry that for centuries has devised ways to accomplish great things on shoestring budgets.

What would these infrastructure investments look like? Affordable space in which to live and work. Adequate financing for capital projects. Tax incentives and economic development programs that no longer discriminate against non-profits.

Over the next few months, Fractured Atlas is going to be promoting this vision in New York, Washington, and anywhere else where they'll listen to us. But we need more ideas!

The Feldman Dynamic, North America’s Foremost Performance Art Family (uncontested), comprised of Adrienne Feldman, Brian Feldman (Best Performance Art - Orlando Weekly’s Best of Orlando 2008), Edward Alan Feldman and Marilyn Wattman-Feldman, sits down to a Chanukah dinner at one of the more unlikely locations imaginable – Cracker Barrel Old Country Store®. This site-specific real life experience, allows you to join The Feldman Dynamic at their table, as they attempt to “do right by Chanukah,” even if that means having to eat hash browns instead of potato latkes. There will be an electric menorah, dreidels and freshly brewed iced tea.

Free to attend. You are invited to join The Feldman Dynamic at their table and order anything off the menu, at your expense.
