I hope that there will be many people who can attend these little mini-events that you have going on downtown. It seems like it is a great place to hang out and meet some new friends and share ideas.

With everything that is going on it is important to take time out of our busy lives for this free feature to meet before work to get some fresh ideas in our heads.

    I just may be there!

    Stacey,

Have you ever attended a BarCamp or other unconference? If you can convince people to show up, this can be a great format.

I would recommend reading up on Open Space - this is the essential methodology behind how BarCamps are run. The idea is to assure everyone has a chance to speak if they wish, and especially if one of your goals is coming up with a plan, Open Space requires that you take notes and have a group review at the end of the day.

Thanks Stacey, I'm sad you won't be able to make it on Saturday. The phrase "vast, strict rules you must follow" sums it up beautifully, and really made my day. If there is anything we can do to help with your event, please let me know.

Our list of presenters is posted at http://tedxorlando.org/presenters.php -if any of them seem like they might be a good fit for the Shakespeare Festival, let me know via the contact tab under my profile on this site, or email me at dave at tedxorlando dot com and I will help you get in touch with them.

I meant to say they are planned for a specific city/town. TEDX will not let you take a planned conference to another city. They have vast, strict rules you must follow for your event.

Too bad I didn't get notice earlier or I would come up. (I now have to work all day Saturday.)

  • TEDxOrlando "The Creative Spark"   5 years 49 weeks ago

TEDx conferences have to be planned, they do not travel. I have been attempting to put together a TEDX in the Naples/Ft. Myers area for a while. If any of you are in this area, please contact me. It is a lot of work. I live in Naples and they require you to hold the event in the town you reside in. I have been going back and forth with them hoping to get an exception but it's not happening.

I am on facebook under the group, SWFL Arts Incubator. If you would like to get involved, join the group and post your interest on the wall. I have been in discussion and have support from some really key people so even if TEDX doesn't work out, we are all interested in holding a symposium on the arts for our region, sooner than later.

What is Dave's number? Any lectures or presentations to do with the arts or classic literature would be of interest to me.

  • TEDxOrlando "The Creative Spark"   5 years 49 weeks ago

There are actually several lectures throughout the day. You should check out tedxorlando.com and see if you can get in touch with Dave Casey.

  • TEDxOrlando "The Creative Spark"   5 years 49 weeks ago

Sounds extremely interesting! I would love to have this lecture at the Gulf Coast Shakespeare Festival on Nov. 19th! How can I contact them?

If you're not familiar with http://www.ted.com/ it is a great resource containing high quality lectures from around the world on a wide variety of topics, many of which bear on urbanism in particular and others on critical analysis of society in general. The local version of that is taking place this Saturday in Winter Garden.

BTW, if you have not yet seen our "State of the Industry" survey, it would be super-awesome if you filled it out, and gave some feedback on the questions too.

    http://floridacreatives.com/survey

There are also 2 people who filled out the survey very early on and we did not get a chance to capture their email addresses. Hopefully they know to come to happy hour or Likemind this week!

A great film to check out is Tanzania - A Friendship Journey

9/21/11 8:00pm at Rollins College Bush Auditorium or 9/22/11 5:30pm at First Congressional Church of Winter Park

Meet Venance Ndibalema, who was born into poverty in Tanzania but found a way out through a college education in the United States, and Kristen Kenny, an American raised by an upper-middle class family, as they undertake a transformational trip to Venance’s homeland. Their journey takes them from the urban center of Dar es Salaam, to the summit of mighty Mount Kilimanjaro and the sweltering plains of the Serengeti, and finally to the impoverished village where a grandmother waits to see the grandson she thought was lost to her forever. Along the way, cultural differences, disease, and a deadly illness threaten not only our travelers but the life of an innocent child. Two friends, one journey, countless lives changed.

Come out and see Project Happiness playing at the Global Peace Film Festival! It is playing on September 25th at 12:30pm at Rollins College- Bush Auditorium.

    Synopsis:

From the alleys of Nigeria and the beaches of California to the mountains of India, ordinary young people lead us on an extraordinary journey to explore the nature of lasting happiness and end up starting a movement. The film focuses on four teens from Santa Cruz, California. Each faces personal obstacles to happiness: loss, alienation and the everyday challenges of being a teenager passing into adulthood. Project Happiness introduces them to their peers in Nigeria and India and quickly leaves lectures and books behind. In addition to connecting with each other, the teens engage in conversations with cultural icons George Lucas, Richard Gere and groundbreaking neuroscientist Richard Davidson. At the end of their year together, the three groups converge in Dharamsala, India for a rare private interview with the Dalai Lama—an event that rocks their expectations, brings more questions than answers and marks a new chapter in their lives.

  • Orlando Improv Festival   6 years 3 weeks ago

If you notice, they have a happy hour scehduled into their events - I say we go and crash the party on Monday, and put a few extra butts in the seats. It'll be like taking a trip to Chicago and seeing their world-class improv acts, but it will only cost a few dollars!

(Orlando has great improv too, and so do all of the other cities represented, but Chicago has a worldwide reputation, so they have us beat there)

  • FLCreatives Happy Hour "ReThinking the City"   6 years 7 weeks ago

Tonight! Here are some details about the event:

ReThinking the City is a monthly symposium that considers the possibilities of an urban environment. It takes place every 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:25PM. We usually have three presentations, two local ones, that are Pecha Kucha type, 20 slides, 20 seconds each. We follow up each presentation with a short Q and A that lasts about the same length as the presentation. The panel of Eliza Harris, Dr. Julian Chambliss, Pat Greene along with that months presenters will facilitate the discussion.

The local presentations are followed by a Skype presentation. This months Skype presentation will be with Pittsburgh's Dawn Weleski who helps run the Conflict Kitchen http://www.conflictkitchen.org/. The Conflict Kitchen serves cuisines from countries that the USA is in conflict with. The idea is to bring a face to the culture.

Mark Baratelli who is the mastermind of the great Orlando blog the Daily City will also be presenting. http://www.thedailycity.com/

John Rife who has been very succesful at showing urbanites a more sensible way to live, and eat will be the other local presenter.

    http://winterparkharvestfestival.com/

Following the presentations David Padgitt from PRP Wine will give a Wine 101 presentation.
