FL Creatives 19: History of Florida Creatives

Download Pecha Kucha Video

This is an abbreviated history of the first few years of Florida Creatives - including some stuff that inspired me to create the first Happy Hour in Orlando, and the folks who were very instrumental in getting the group started and keeping things healthy.

Several of the events and people surrounding the first BlogOrlando brought about many of the things we hold dear today, such as:

BlogOrlando was really the event that kicked Florida Creatives out of the minds of the collective and into reality. Don't believe me? Watch this video. Yours truly has the full explanation of how it all went down.

Recorded at the first Pecha Kucha Night in Jacksonville.

Processing Running on iPhone

@JohnRife was posting on Twitter today about trying to get Processing running on his iPhone. That one message inspired me to make some posts and get some things going on this group.

Via Create Digital Motion

I didn't think you could run Processing on an iPhone, since it is based on Java, but it looks like John Resig, a true Guru of JavaScript if ever there was one, has come up with a solution to get processing code to run in a web browser without any plugins. I added a bunch of bookmarks about Processing.js to a brand-new Processing group on Ma.gnolia, which is a public feed which anyone can contribute to. New links in that group will appear on the right sidebar of the graphics hackers group page of FloridaCreatives.com. The group itself has 15 registered members... anybody else excited by this?

Via the Processing website:

Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain.

Processing is free to download and available for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.

Salem, MA: The Build Guild

Jason Hawkins is a filmmaker and a former member of Florida Creatives who has moved on to other (greener?) pastures in Witch Country. He shot a little video at the first meeting of a meetup very similar to Florida Creatives. Check out his post:

Make Film Work » Salem, MA - The Build Guild

1 Salem, MA from Jason Hawkins on Vimeo.

Since moving to Salem I’ve been working on an idea to create video snapshots about some of the cool things I’ve seen here. This video highlights the The Build Guild, a meetup for people in the web industry, and is the first in (what will become) a series of similar snapshots.

Unfortunately, I was a little off my game when I shot this and as a result the audio suffered greatly. Sorry about that.

Downtown Photowalk / Videowalk

Location

Orange County Regional History Center
65 E Central Blvd
Orlando, FL 32801
May 10 2008 12:00p - 6:00p

Be ye photographers, videobloggers, people wanting to learn something about downtown Orlando? Are you interested in using your talents to showcase what the non-tourism-driven part of Orlando has to offer? The crew from OrlandoScene.TV will be taking the History Center's official walk of downtown, with dozens of historic stops all over the city.

We are asking photographers to come with us on a photowalking expedition, because our video piece will be about the photowalking trend and Downtown Orlando will be our setting.

At the end of the day we will be attending "Improv en Espanol" at SAK Comedy Lab. If you're interested in snapping some photos there, it will be their first anniversary doing the show on Saturdays, and I know they will appreciate it.

If you have any questions, please direct them to [info AT orlandoscene.tv]

Florida Creatives Secret Handshake

0 BookmarksLog in to bookmark

Today at BarCamp I suggested we create a "secret" handshake for Florida Creatives members or people who are involved in the local community.

Here are some suggestions: hugs, peace sign, hang loose, three-fingered wave, etc.

What would you use as the Florida Creatives secret handshake? Record something and post it in the comments!

Coworking: Creative TreeHouse Pittsburgh

0 BookmarksLog in to bookmark

Creative TreeHouse is creative coworking studio that offers shared creative space, a meeting/event spot, and creative services to the Pittsburgh, PA area. This video is from an event they held some time ago where artists stayed up for 24 hours in the space and created original works from scratch around the theme of "Treehouse".

One of the goals of Florida Creatives is to open a similar space in Orlando. We can't do it without your help.
