monochrom #26-34: Ye Olde Self-Referentiality
A semi-entertaining release performance
Presented at Urban ReThink in Orlando, FL
625 E Central Blvd, Orlando, FL 32801
December 16, 2010, 8:00 PM

The phatzine monochrom #26-34 (Goat of 1k Young) is an impossibility in an impossible universe -- an unpeculiar mixture of proto-aesthetic fringe work, pop attitude, subcultural science and political activism. 500 pages (67 ounces) of outrageous printed bestiality. And we plan to thoughtfully present it at Urban ReThink... in the Most Central of all possible Floridas!

Listen to an interview with Johannes from the last time monochrom visited Florida

But what is monochrom?

monochrom is a magazine object appearing in telephone book format, which is published by the art/tech group of the same name. monochrom came into being in the mid-1990s as a fanzine for cyberculture, science, theory, cultural studies and the archaeology of pop culture in everyday life. Its collage format is reminiscent both of the early DIY fanzines of the punk and new wave underground and of the artist books of figures such as Dieter Roth, Martin Kippenberger and others. With a great deal of forced discontinuity, a cohesive potpourri of digital and analog subversion is pressed between the covers of monochrom. Each issue is an unnostalgic amalgam of 125 years of Western counterculture cocked, aimed and ready to fire at the present. It is a Sears catalog of subjective and objective irreconcilability -- the Godzilla version of the conventional coffee table book.

Likemind is before work (8AM), it happens downtown, and everyone is welcome. Bring a few friends, get some coffee, and tell us what's on your mind.

Since Urban ReThink is open to events now, and Ryan is connected to the space, let's meet up in Thornton Park this month. The interational date for Likemind is moved for Novemeber-December so as not to interfere with holiday travel.
Likemind Orlando
Groups in 60+ other cities all over the world will be getting together for conversations with their community - sure, they may not have 2+ years of these events behind them, but we do.

More than 3 years ago, I heard about these two marketing guys / geeks from New York who had started an event they held on Friday mornings for coffee and conversation. The first few were just the two of them, but as they invited people and the word got out, it grew until it started getting on the radar all over the world. Now Likemind happens in scores of cities on every continent, and Orlando has been on that list almost since the beginning.

On the first opening night of professional basketball at Amway Center (originally known as the Orlando Events Center), award-winning logophile Brian Feldman will read the new NBA rule book to fans, outside, across from the Orlando Magic Team Shop presented by adidas, in the manner of a street preacher.

If you’re gonna argue with the refs this season, you gotta know the rules.
