At BarCampOrlando this weekend, i met Dave from TEDxOrlando - he showed me his TEDx business card holder, and told me it was printed by a rapid prototyping robot down at FAMiLab.

They have a lot of fun toys down there, and I have just found out they also have a mailing list:

BarCamp Orlando is a community building event which happens once a year to bring together people from different backgrounds to share and learn from each other. There will be people who know Java, .NET, Ruby, Python, PHP, and other technologies coming together with people who know film, music, photography, graphic design, podcasting, and even other new Media.

We hope to provide free T-shirts and Lunch to all attendees, but we can only do this with assistance from sponsors (Click here for information on sponsoring). T-shirts will be first come, first serve, so you're best off coming early if you definitely want a shirt.

There is only one rule with BarCamp:

It is strongly recommended that attendees give a demo, a session, or help with one. This is called sharing and we like it.

Likemind is before work (8AM), it happens downtown, and everyone is welcome. Bring a few friends, get some coffee, and tell us what's on your mind.

We've been having some healthy turnout in the past few months. If you're getting something out of this event, please invite some friends.

Since Urban ReThink is open now, and the Virgin Olive Market is serving coffee and food, let's meet up in Thornton Park. Street parking is abundant, so I don't want to hear any parking complaints. Also, meeting in downtown is part of the spirit of this event.

Groups in 60+ other cities all over the world will be getting together for conversations with their community - sure, they may not have 2+ years of these events behind them, but we do.

More than 3 years ago, I heard about these two marketing guys / geeks from New York who had started an event they held on Friday mornings for coffee and conversation. The first few were just the two of them, but as they invited people and the word got out, it grew until it started getting on the radar all over the world. Now Likemind happens in scores of cities on every continent, and Orlando has been on that list almost since the beginning.

Our goal is to have casual meetings in which to practice speaking Japanese, meet others who share our interests for Japanese language/ culture and offer advice for those seeking travel/work in Japan.

Of course, all are welcome;from native speaker, to someone who has yet to study Japanese.

The environment will be relaxed as to foster conversation in both Japanese and English. You will be encouraged to use what you know, or help those who may not. We do not have any set lessons or lesson plans, but please feel free to bring your own materials if you have questions or want to share a good text/plan.

Video from TEDx Orlando

Orlando had its first TEDx on November 13th, 2010 at the Orlando Science Center. Video from the TEDxOrlando talks have started to be released on YouTube recently.

Here is a video from Marc Sardy titled Educating for Peace through the Global Peace Film Festival:

Marc Sardy is passionate about educating for peace. Following formative experiences in the Australian outback, the UK, Malaysia, France, and China, he became convinced that cinema can be a powerful tool for inspiring people and motivating them to come together. Since 2005, he's worked with Orlando's Global Peace Festival in order to realize this vision. Festival programming focuses on diversity, and films are selected for the potential they have to increase understanding, awareness, appreciation and action -- prerequisites for a peaceful world.

Orlando Sentinel Grokking the Freelance Community?

In today's paper (yes, they still print news on to dead trees) there is an article about the not-yet-open Urban ReThink in Downtown Orlando's Thornton Park neighborhood. The article mainly focuses on the Coworking part of it - trust me, there is a lot more to it than Coworking. Still, coverage in the mainstream media is nice, and I have had several people messaging me because they saw my name in the paper. Cool stuff.

A new chapter opens for Urban Think! as a workplace

Below that I saw a photo of (twentysomething) kids sitting at laptops... It was an article about free wi-fi in Orlando. Did the Sentinel's recommendation engine get lucky, or was it some savvy web editor who knew that people reading about Cow-orking would also be looking for cool places to work and get wi-fi? I am betting on the latter.

Where to find free Wi-Fi spots in Central Florida

Here on Florida Creatives, we have a small directory of Orlando Wi-Fi Spots as well - in our wiki.
