Brian Feldman and his father sustain a 24 hour embrace on Father’s Day, inside the boxing ring at Orange Ave Gym.

Spectators are welcome to enter the ring and embrace a loved one after the 12th hour.

“24 Hour Embrace” was first performed by artist Young Sun Han at Swimming Pool Project Space in Chicago, Illinois on December 31, 2008.

“24 Hour Embrace (after Young Sun Han)” marks the first time that Young Sun Han has granted permission to re-perform this piece, as well as the first time that Brian Feldman has re-performed another artist’s work.

Likemind is before work (8AM), it happens downtown, and everyone is welcome. Bring a few friends, get some coffee, and tell us what's on your mind.

We've been having some healthy turnout in the past few months. If you're getting something out of this event, please invite some friends.

Since Urban ReThink is open now, and the Virgin Olive Market is serving coffee and food, let's meet up in Thornton Park. Street parking is abundant, so I don't want to hear any parking complaints. Also, meeting in downtown is part of the spirit of this event.
Likemind Orlando
Groups in 60+ other cities all over the world will be getting together for conversations with their community - sure, they may not have 2+ years of these events behind them, but we do.

More than 3 years ago, I heard about these two marketing guys / geeks from New York who had started an event they held on Friday mornings for coffee and conversation. The first few were just the two of them, but as they invited people and the word got out, it grew until it started getting on the radar all over the world. Now Likemind happens in scores of cities on every continent, and Orlando has been on that list almost since the beginning.

FLCreatives "Nomads" Happy Hour at Orlando Fringe, Loch Haven Park

Florida Creatives Happy Hour

Location

Orlando Fringe, Loch Haven Park
900 E Princeton St On the Green Lawn of Fabulousness
Orlando, FL 32803
Community or Meetup:
May 24 2011 6:00p - 9:00p

NOTE: this event is on a TUESDAY. We are moving away from Mondays.

This month marks the 20th anniversary of the Orlando Fringe Festival. Their tagline is "12 days of theatre, art, music, dance and madness". Trust me when I say that this is the premier cultural event in Orlando. The beers are available for a donation to the non-profit festival, and there are lots of food vendors set up in the park. After you get some nosh and socialize, grab a Fringe button and a ticket to a show and go check out some original plays, shows that have appeared off-Broadway, or some of the more unconventional performances. There is something for everyone at this festival.

Florida Creatives has been using the Infamous Fringe Beer Tent as a backdrop for our meetups since the beginning. Last year we even had a Pecha Kucha style slideshow event. Next month, June will be the last Nomads event, then we will try to decide on a regular spot.

Animatronics Experimenter's Kit

Aaron Fecther, creator of Showbiz Pizza's Rockafire Explosion, sells a kit for making a talking head animatronic robot. In this example he uses an air compressor, a light switch and a cassette deck to control the performance - exactly the same technology he used in the 1970s. A lot of people in the YouTube comments ask about using computers or MIDI, and I'm sure this is possible as well.

You can buy the kits from http://www.aaronskit.com

iPhone ID swipe apliclication

We have been pitching the idea for a iPhone application to read the magnetic stripe on IDs and driver licence to sell to bars/pubs/restaurants/liquor stores. We have been obsessively researching the feasibility of the app and are ready to start the build.

Would anybody be interested in teaming up for development on a co-founding basis?

What is it? Central Florida has several thriving, yet disjointed communities. There are groups of software developers, filmmakers, designers, entrepreneurs and an array of other creative individuals. We're inviting the leaders and members of these communities to join us for a brainstorming meetup on how to build an even stronger, more vibrant community of DOERS. This is a FREE EVENT and open to any and all who would like to participate in building a better community. Why? We have all of the pieces and parts of a strong and vibrant tech & creative community, but somehow we're not quite living up to our full potential.

Chad Miller's Orlando Crime Map

Chad has taken some publicly available data put out by the Orlando Police, and displayed it on a Google Map.

He also has a number of Twitter accounts for all the zip codes in the area, each with their own feed of calls - https://twitter.com/orlpol/following

He also gives a pie chart showing the breakdown of the different types of calls. Apparently the police reply to a lot of "suspicious person", "commercial alarm", and "general disturbance" calls, not to mention "battery" and "accident" (injuries or minor) calls.

A possible app to build: Food Truck Map of Orlando

1 BookmarksLog in to bookmark

In light of the screaming popularity of Food Trucks in Orlando lately, I was thinking of putting together a list of food trucks - where are they, when are they open?

One example:
http://www.foodtrucksmap.com/la/

It would certainly need to be mobile friendly, or perhaps primarily optimized for mobile at first.

The big question is how to get the Food Truck owners to check in, and make it meaningful.

Only one food truck owner was Tweeting from a location, and it was state wide. Some would say (in plain text) where they were headed, but it could be the day before, morning of, or after they had set up already.
