NASA held it's International Space Apps challenge in locations around the world, hoping to find solutions by letting hackers manipulate U.S. government data. The International Space Apps Challenge joined together over 2,000 people around the world in creating solutions of global importance related to spaceflight.

In addition to the 25 locations working on challenges around the world, the International Space Apps Challenge had one additional - and very unique - location: virtual participation. Virtual participants logged in from all over to connect with each other, connect with physical locations, form teams, and get to work.

The mistaken notion is that the primary product of the newspaper is journalism.

"The future of Local News is About More Than Just Paid content" is an article thinking about the future of "Newspapers" or community data sources/feeds on the Knight foundation sponsered "MediaShift Idea Lab" PBS website.

A newspaper is a product that, at least at its peak, provided about 50 different services for people. It helped people figure out where to shop. It delivered a boatload of coupons every Sunday. It helped them plan their weekend. It entertained them with comics and puzzles. It let them know what was on the school lunch menu. And along the way, it also delivered journalism.

Our first meetup was held at Urban ReThink on April 10th, 2011, a week after BarCampOrlando.

The idea here is to get together people who are interested in building mashups, and ultimately getting local people to share the kinds of data that will make life in Central Florida more interesting - these people could be government entities, nonprofits, companies, food truck owners, bloggers, or just average Joes and Janes.

We currently have an iCal aggregator set up with Elm City. If you know of iCal feeds that are about Orlando, please let use know, and Steve will add them to the Delicous account.

Open Data

We as a community have the skills and cleverness to apply computational thinking to the big problem we face today of "doing more with less." How do we get beyond the technology... RSS, RDF, Microformats, iCal, etc., to get other people who do not self-identify as geeks — to actually use authoritative feed syndication to enable Gov 2.0 and the evolution of the institutions we all depend upon.

Data syndication is a fundamental concept and basic skill for all "digital citizens" in order to grow a healthy economy and community. What needs to be taught and what should we expect people to know? Who needs to be taught first? Where is the funding? If you have some ideas, can lend a hand, or influence decision makers, please attend or contribute your thoughts.
