FLCreatives Happy Hour - Build Guild - Tech Happy Hour at The Other Bar

The VolTron of Happy Hours!

Location

The Other Bar
18 Wall Street
Orlando, FL 32801
Community or Meetup:
Dec 12 2012 6:00p - 9:00p

I'm calling this the VolTron Happy Hour.

This month the local technology groups are joining forces to throw a massive holiday happy hour at The Other Bar (on Wall Street between the Cantina and Wai Tiki). This is the normal date for Build Guild but several groups are also participating. Come and grow the Orlando scene!

Come and join some of the passionate creative minds of Orlando in one of the longest-running happy hour meetups in the state of Florida (almost 6 years!). Our goal is to provide a safe environment to share your schemes, unearth passions and meet mentors or co-founders. We always get a pretty diverse representation - lately we have graphic designeers, lawyers, illustrators, city planners, startup founders, tech folks and a plethora of others.

This is by far one of the best ways to "get involved" in the community. The people at our Happy Hours are plugged in to what is going on and who is doing it.

I decided this event needed a Mulligan. Same Bat Place, different Bat Time. The Courtesy even got a mention in Cole Nesmith's Pecha Kucha talk about all the awesome people and things in Orlando.

The Courtesy is a new establishment in an old buidling riding the "mixology" wave - they make some interesting cocktails and serve up craft beer and wine too. They are in the Dolive buidling - that place that was boarded up for the past few years - don't let that scare you off, I've been told it's a really great new place.

If you have been to our past happy hours at Gringos Locos it is diagonally across the corner from them, at the Northwest intersection of Washington and Orange Ave.

Last time there was a Sushi Food Truck parked out back. You would go out and order, and a runner brought your food in. Gringos is also across the street. Yum!

If you're not into cocktails or beer,
the Courtesy makes their own sodas and carries some excellent Ginger Ales and non-alcoholic delights.

I'm sure we'll get hungry, and Gringos would be a great place to finish, so don't worry if you're not into cocktails. I also read the Courtesy makes their own sodas!

Hawkers is one of the most unique restaraunts in the area - a combination of street food from all over southeast Asia - served in the same style you would get out of the back of a hawker's cart.

This week they are holding a canned food drive - anyone with canned food for Second Harvest will get 10% off their dinner.

Come an meet some of the talented creative minds of Orlando in one of the longest-running happy hour meetups in the state of Florida. We hope you can find a safe place to share new ideas, talk about your passions and meet some mentors or collaborators. We have been attracting a pretty diverse group recently, so you don't want to miss it!

What do you get when you take some people who are into science, art, handmade goods, strange hobbies, and all kinds of media, put them in a room, and give them no agenda? Come and find out! We have been getting together for more than 5 and a half years now and having a great time meeting new friends, collaborators and people who "get it".

The Falcon Bar is a semi-permanent home for us, and with a few dollars of Graffiti Junktion credit to spend, we might even be able to provide some food this month.

Tell a friend, stop by after work, beat the heat of the afternoon and grab a craft beer or a glass of wine in downtown Orlando. You won't regret it.

Thanks to Barry Kirsch for our new promo picture!

Latin meets Asian, Restaurant meets Food Truck. Sounds like an awesome mashup to me. Tako Cheena is a great example of the kind of energy we encourage at Florida Creatives - take things that don't traditionally belong together, put them in the same room, and watch the sparks fly!

Come an meet some of the talented creative minds of Orlando in one of the longest-running happy hour meetups in the state of Florida. Tako Cheena will be opening up special for us. They have also told me it's OK to BYOB for tonight - normally they only serve sodas juice and water.

Join Orlando's longest-running creative meetup to celebrate our 5th year of bringing likeminded people together. You can get great benefits out of meeting new people, like stimulating your brain, having a safe (non-judgemental) place to talk shop, finding someone to help you build that next startup, or just making friends.

Falcon Bar was very good to us in April - let's pay them another visit. I'd love to talk about the idea of holding small unconferences throughout the year with a focused mission. We have so much to share, why do it just once a year?

The Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival is one of the most anticipated and creatively freewheeling events we have in Orlando, and our May happy hour has always taken place under their sacred Beer Tent. Your beer money all goes to support this non-profit festival and make sure independent theatre has a place to grow and thrive every year.

Usually we hang out under the beer tent for a little while and take advantage of the food trucks parked on the green lawn (bring cash), and follow that up with a show or two at the festival.

Some shows I am suggesting that have some appeal to Florida Creatives:

  • Connected at 5:45
  • Scientist Turned Comedian at 7:30
  • Medicine at 11:00

There are tons of great shows, and probably several you would like to see if you check out the complete list, so please don't hesitate to make a suggestion (take a look at Page 8 of this PDF for the Monday schedule).

This month the fine Falcons from Thornton Park actually requested our presence. I think that might be the first time a venue reached out to us! This place has an art gallery vibe, and is in the best neighborhood (I think so, at least).

This month's happy hour is also just days after BarCamp Orlando, which got started at one of our original Likemind meetups back in the day!

The who live/work in East Orlando will get some due for a) being noisy and b) being present at last month's Happy Hour (seriously how could you guys miss out on free beer?). Therefore we are venturing on to the UCF campus near the stadium for the Tailgaiters Smoke House experience.

If we keep this up maybe we can eventually have more than one Happy Hour a month... (Dr. Evil Pinky)?

Also curious how we get some students - Marketing, Communications, Digital Media, Computer Science, Creative Writing, etc to attend these if we keep doing them in their back yard. Discuss!
