A collection of documents relating to the mission, rules?, projects, traditions and history of the Florida Creatives group.
FloridaCreatives.com is the best place to get information about upcoming events and past events, as well as what's going on with our members. Ryan has been interviewing people about once a month for a podcast (iTunes link) to help raise awareness about the activities of local creatives. Anyone is welcome to make new posts on the blog, or create a new design for the site.
A job posting community was in the works, but the best way to get a message to everyone right now is through the Google Groups discussion list.
If you can't find a piece of information, we're not doing our jobs right. Please submit all requests for information to the Contact Form.
Florida Creatives is, first and foremost, a networking group. People of all disciplines and all levels of experience are invited to come together to enrich their creative experience, learn from each other, and gain inspiration in a social environment. The immediate benefits of such a group are often collaboration, employment opportunities and creative partnerships, with fringe benefits being innumerable. One purpose of the Florida Creatives website is to highlight some of those relationships and partnerships through blogging and podcasting, while also providing an online discussion place in between meetings.
One way we plan to achieve our mission of creating a statewide community is through a few centralized gatherings, whether they are conventions, classes, barbecues, festivals or all of the above. Such an event may be hosted by the founding chapter in Orlando or any of the local chapters in other parts of the state. The point is to take these strong local communities and create an environment for cross-pollination to occur. While the Internet makes such connections possible, this group exists because of the undeniable connection made by seeing and speaking to a like-minded person face-to-face. When such an event takes place, people from all over the world will be invited, as our own community is but one part of a global community of creatives.
Anyone can start a Creatives group in their city, and we will be very happy to host your group's site here. As a matter of fact, we will host ANY GROUP'S site here on Florida Creatives. You get a blog that updates folks via email, a wiki, members-only posting, blogs, a news aggregator, event listings and lots more. We won't ask you for anything. Visit this Wiki Page for some tips to start your own group.
If you have a suggestion for a podcast interview subject, or if you are interested in conducting an interview of your own, you are welcome to do so. Anyone interested in becoming a field correspondent should contact Ryan Price (info [at] liberatr dot net) for more information.
Florida Creatives is a podcast, which means we plan on posting regular updates in the form of audio files. No iPod or portable MP3 player of any kind is required to listen to podcasts. All of our shows are simple mp3 files, which can be played in every popular media player. Aside from the audio, there is this great enabling technology for podcasts called RSS, or Really Simple Syndication. RSS feeds allow you the listener to be notified every time we release a new show, and to automatically download the MP3 file if you use iTunes or a media browser like Songbird. To subscribe to this show, please paste this RSS Feed in to your RSS reader or podcatcher.
Current episodes of Florida Creatives are being hosted by Ryan Price, the Producer of this and several other shows in the Liberatr Media Network. Liberatr is dedicated to broadcasting the voices and faces of anyone who has something to say, and letting the people decide what they want. We are developing a network of offerings that will appeal to people of distinct tastes as well as those who prefer to sample media buffet style.

At the 2007 Orlando International Fringe Theatre festival, I rented out a vendor space partly in the name of Florida Creatives, and had a Happy Hour on the Green area at the Fringe.
For educating nonprofits, small businesses, artists and creatives of
all kinds about free, open-source and cheap software alternatives to
the more expensive mainstream options. Not only what they are and why
you should use them, but how they can get support as well.
I was thinking about taking up the offer from our friends over at the
History Center, since that's across the street from our informal home
base at Crooked Bayou.
We can call the Ubuntu guys, the Programming user groups, the Linux
kids, etc. Who knows OpenOffice? Does anyone local support it?
Can we plant the free wi-fi seed at this event as well? Do we sell
table space?
Just thoughts.
Orlando Events Promotion
Florida Creatives will be having our one year anniversary in December, and I'm pretty sure we're going to make a special event of it by scheduling our monthly happy hour at Orlando Brewing and trying to schedule something special to get as many old participants as possible as well as new faces. If this means gathering sponsorships to buy everyone a drink or two and some food (Orlando brewing has a BYO-Food set-up), let's talk about who we can tap in the next two months.

This is what it sounds like - something to print on the webpage, posters, Moo Cards, flyers and press releases to introduce people to the spirit of the group.
Feel free to submit your own version below - please copy and paste a section (or push the button with the big "A" on it) and put your name in the heading so we know who contributed that version. If you have something to say in comment to a particular posting, please wrap in "in quotes" and include - Your Name after the comment. ...? We should just use the blog for this, huh?
"To keep with the 'Manifesto' idea, I tried to make each line have a complete thought, but then for the 3 lines to add up to something at the end of the stanza. I wrote this late one night when I had something to get out of my head. Corrections and revisions are very welcome. I don't know if this really hits all the points, but it's something to start with." - Ryan Price

The Director of the Essence of Irwin and former Programming Director for the Downtown Media Arts Center joins Ryan Price for a discussion about his history and the journey of creating his film.
Darren is also working on a local startup company called Petentials: The Internet for Pets.
Tisse, Katrina Priore, Dana Delapi and Becky Lane talk to Ryan Price during BarCamp Orlando 2008.
marc. with a c. (aka Marc Sirdoreus) is someone I’ve been a friend of for the last 2+ years, and a fan of from the first moment I saw him play on the same day. I have had the honor of performing on stage with his band, but someone doesn’t really help Marc create something, as much as support his performance. The exception would be Chris Zabriskie, Marc’s creative other half (not appearing in this podcast). Listen in as I pay verbal homage to a good friend and a great contributor to Orlando’s independent music and ‘zine scene.
The following songs appear in this podcast:
* Classic Country Wasn't Multitracked in '61 (Normal Bias)
* Born Vintage (If Conditions Persist, I Will Resist)
* Bite Sized Help (This World is Scary as Fuck)

monochrom is an Austrian art-theory group with an international resume that makes me very jealous. I got the chance to sit down with Johannes Grenzfurthner and Evelyn Fürlinger over some Thai food and talk about some of his many achievements, as well as just talk with an intelligent and well-humored guy.
There are lots more show-notes necessary for this episode, but I don't have the time to sit and list all of the references we make. If someone is motivated and wants to help listing relevant websites, etc. I would appreciate it very much.
Catch some videos and other collected works of monochrom on boing boing.

The 2nd Annual BlogOrlando unconference was a smashing success, and lots of Florida Creatives members participated or acted as discussion leaders. Ryan Price gets impressions from Becky Lane and Darren McDaniel about what they took away from the conference.
Florida Creatives would like to send huge thanks to Josh Hallet and all the event organizers and contributors for putting on BlogOrlando.
Becky works with educational theatre for elementary age kids, and Darren works on a social networking site, so the crossover between their jobs actually turned out some interesting points during the discussion. One example: there are kids’ social networks and moms’ social networks, but none really for moms (or dads) of kids who are using social networks.
The First Annual Ella Music Festival is happening on October 5th and 6th in the Rogers building in downtown Orlando. The festival celebrates female artists of all kinds, but certainly centers around a musical schedule. Robert Johnson and Jonathan Andrews of Gamble Records are organizing the festival, and Ryan Price talks to them about how they got into doing a festival and what their plans are.
The Broken Speech Poetry Slam happens every Thursday night at Stardust Video & Coffee in Winter Park. The slam is now 6 years old, and is led by J. Bradley and hosted by Jelian Morales. The show gets started around 9 or 9:30, and promises something different every week.
Holly Riggs is a spoken word artist, actor, producer, crafter and someone we want to pay attention to. Since this interview was recorded, she has left Orlando for Boston, and I interviewed her at her farewell party at Dandelion CommuniTEA. She talks about her company Starbananas and her label Nonsense Records.
From the Tampa Blogger Meetup on February 27th at Hawk’s Neighborhood Grill in South Tampa, Ryan Price interviews Jim Johnson, Tommy “Beer” Duncan, Tim Burke, Lisa Ciurro, Matt Ragis and Joel Ramos from the Sticks of Fire blog.
Sticks of Fire is a blog about Tampa and the Bay Area by Tampa residents. I had the pleasure of getting to talk to most of the Sticks team about what they do on and off the web, and also about Florida Creatives. This is a dynamic group that should be paid attention to, and I hope to be able to come back to everyone I met at the Tampa Blogger Dinner and find out what they’re doing soon.
From the Tampa Blogger Meetup on February 27th at Hawk’s Neighborhood Grill in South Tampa, Ryan Price interviews Lisa Ciurro from Tampa Film Fan and Tampa Book Buzz, Derrick Daye from Branding Strategy Insider and Ryan from Groovr.com.
Lisa tells us about what she does, Derrick enlightens us with some branding knowledge, then Groovr Ryan tells us about moblogging. Florida Creatives Ryan then finishes off by bringing it all together.
From the Tampa Blogger Meetup on February 27th at Hawk’s Neighborhood Grill in South Tampa, Ryan Price interviews Kimberly Finn of the Tampa Downtown Partnership and Creative Tampa Bay and Eric Sturm of TampaOptions.com.
The conversation covers blogging, creative groups and the increasing trend to organizing those and other groups online. We have two more podcasts from the Blogger Dinner on the way, so stay dialed in for more blogger profiles and thoughts.
John Rife joins Ryan Price to discuss the birth of Florida Creatives and the Creative Summit in Ryan’s kitchen, as well as talk about videoblogging and his past. John is very community minded, so we also get a healthy dose of where he sees Central Florida heading in the coming years.
Emurse.com is a website developed by two Floridians and UCF Grads with the idea of simplifying your job search. I had the privilege of meeting Gavin Hall and Alex Rudloff at this year’s BlogOrlando conference.
During this show we discuss not only Emurse (an anagram for “resume”) but what brought these serial entrepreneurs to start the site and what keeps them in Orlando when I’m sure they could write their own ticket in any major city.
Alex and Gavin are now active attendees of our Happy Hour, as evidenced here.

I wish these guys the best of luck in their quest to make your job search easier. I use the product and I have to say it works beautifully.
Update: right after this interview was posted, the boys rolled out a new feature on the Emurse blog that lets you search jobs relevant to you. They didn’t include it on the podcast because it wasn’t ready yet, but it is there now and very cool. Now you can post your resume and search for jobs inside Emurse. The job search has officially gotten easier.
Mark Baratelli is a local podcaster, marketer, thespian, producer and an excellent first guest for our show. We begin by discussing his role as Social Media Coordinator for the 2007 Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, then move on to his current efforts.
Mark produces several podcasts:
* The Orlando Arts Podcast
* Lady Raptastic
* How Do You Feel?
* Vivian Beaumont and Vivian Beaumont
Another great way to get in touch with Mark is through his MySpace page. Enjoy our first podcast, recorded at Junior’s Diner in Winter Park.

As long as the Florida Creatives Happy Hour has existed, we have been recording podcast profiles with members of our community. As each interview is recorded, time rolls on behind us, the ideals and goals of our group become more refined, and we hope the content of the podcasts will reflect our evolution.
I have a plan I'd like to get in motion that involves printing up several Florida Creatives posters featuring artwork and photography created by and featuring local creative talent as a way to promote our next year of events. We know where and when all the events will be happening, so it makes sense to give some of us a chance to brighten up the windows and bulletin boards of some of our favorite places in town with some local art as well as give people a visual reminder of who we are, what we're about, and when we come together. Anyone wishing to submit some design work, photos, or something else they've created should hop on the Wiki and click on the page for "poster campaign" so you can add yourself to the list.
