UPDATE: Please read the comments below. We are having a problem with spam on the site, and I'd like to raise the level of protection we're receiving. Mollom costs €30 (approximately $42.50) per month. Therefore, I'm asking our community to help me raise $510 to pay for a year of beefier spam protection.

OK, so it looks like the spammers are really starting to target us now...

I could implement a system where all anonymous comments get moderated, but we'd need some volunteers to filter them. Otherwise, the usefulness of this site is much lower, because there would be lots of crap coming in to your email.

we have 290 members now (in the bulk of the site), that's a lot of spam.

Update on the spam

Update on the spam control:

MrNoded has volunteered to help with spam moderation, so now both myself and Jim can approve comments. If you'd like to become a moderator, let me know and I will promote you.

Also, the folks who develop Mollom released an update today, specifically for our version of the module (Drupal 5).

As we speak, I am installing a second layer of control with a module simply called "Spam". It has a number of filters available, like checking for too many URLs in a comment, looking at old posts, and some Bayesian machine learning as well. Hopefully this will cut back on the frequency of the spam that Jim, myself and the other moderators will have to filter through.

I have received several "please unsubscribe me" emails in the last week. I'm glad it wasn't 300 such emails. Thanks to everyone for having faith.

There is a particular page in the wiki that gives instructions for unsubscribing from email notifications. It's very step-by-step. Also, Jim or any other moderator should be able to turn off your notifications now as well.
